The Honda Civic Type R is a hot hatch that was first introduced on the EK9 Civic in 1997. In 2001 the EP3 chassis was given the Type R treatment, with the EU version getting a 2.0 "K20A" i-VTEC Inline 4 producing 200HP, close ratio 5 speed manual transmission and uprated brakes and was exclusive to the UK. However, in 2002, Honda marketed a JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) version which had the renown LSD of the EK9, Recaro racing seats, track-orientated chassis & suspension and an upgraded engine producing 212HP. All of the Japan-spec K20A Type-R powertains were built in Japan and were shipped to Swindon to be installed in the Euro-spec Type-R EP3. The JDM EP3 was also available in the traditional Type R championship white while the EDM was not. The EDM has more relaxed gear ratios and some high rpm torque traded for low rpm torque compared to the JDM. The JDM Civic was said to be the better of the two. In 2004, MUGEN (Honda's in-house tuner) offered a modified version of the Civic Type R (Exclusive to the JDM version), with a sport exhaust system and engine tuning (Now producing 240HP), special Mugen Grille and anti-roll bars.
