In 2012, in a partnership with JAS Motorsport, Honda entered the final three rounds of the World Touring Car Championship with a race car based on the Euro-spec Civic 5 door hatchback, driven by Tiago Monteiro. The car scored its first podium at the Race of Macau that year.
In 2013, they entered the full season of WTCC as Castrol Honda World Touring Car Team, with Gabriele Tarquini joining Monteiro as the drivers. Independent team, Zengő Motorsport also used the Civic full season, which was driven by Norbert Michelisz.
The car scored its first win at the Race of Slovakia with a podium lockout, when Tarquini won, Monteiro came second and Michelisz third. The works team scored more wins at Sonoma with Tarquini, and Shanghai with Monteiro. Michelisz also scored an overall win at Suzuka.
After winning race two at Sonoma, Honda won the Manufacturers' World Championship. In the drivers' championship, Tarquini finished 2nd, Michelisz 6th and Monteiro 8th. During the season the car won 4 races, 3 pole positions and finished on the podium 20 times.
