Honda Cup Race 2
Honda S800 '66 and Honda S800 RSC Race Car '68 at Driving Park - Motorland, Forward and Reverse

[As always, if anyone would like to volunteer to take a picture, it will go here :)]

Race Specifics

  • Arcade Mode Time Trial - hotlaps
  • Power: +20% (81 HP for the road car; 116 HP for the race car)
  • Weight: -10% (648 kg for the road car; 594 kg for the race car)
  • Tire Type: Economy for the road car, Racing Super Hard for the race car
  • Driving aids, transmission mode, and top speed setting (for the race car) are open.
  • This week, you will race one car on the forward track and the other on the reverse track. What is up to you is whether you race the road car on the forward track and race car on the reverse, or the race car on the forward track and the road car on the reverse. Try both possibilities, add up the two times in each combination, and see which gives you a faster total time.
  • Standard OLR cleanliness rules apply: Two wheels must be in contact with the track at all times; rumble strips and tarmac behind white lines are part of the track; no contact with walls allowed at any time.
  • Please PM me your final time in each car, and on which track each time was recorded, by Tuesday September 8 by 11:59 pm GMT (world clock).

Series Information and General Rules

  • All six races will be run in Arcade Mode and each will last one week, with a submission deadline of Tuesday at 11:59 PM GMT.
  • The cars used will be a variety of Hondas, mostly road cars on standard (N) tires, but with race cars appearing as well. Make sure you have all Hondas, used and new, unlocked in Arcade Mode, because few of the cars I will use are available from the beginning.
  • Standard OLR cleanliness rules apply: Two wheels must be in contact with the track at all times; rumble strips are part of the track; no contact with walls allowed at any time.
  • Becase Motorland has no split times, you may discuss your lap times, but only the number of seconds, not the number of tenths, for each car. For example, if your two laps are 35.286 seconds and 49.992 seconds, post them only as 35 and 49 seconds, respectively. Also, do not discuss, even vaguely, the amount by which you improved, e.g. "I shaved half a second and now have a 35;" however, you may state the simple fact that you improved. You may also discuss the race car's top speed setting, as well as which car you use on the forward track and which car you use on the reverse track. Exact final times are not to be discussed and must be submitted to me by PM before the week's deadline, along with which car you used on which track.
  • Please save your best lap replay just in case I request proof, which is unlikely but possible. Generally, no proof will be necessary for the winner or for anyone else; however, I reserve the right to request a photo of a time if I am suspicious of it.
  • Each race will award points towards the overall championship standings to all who submit a clean lap/race time, with the winner receiving 10 points, second place 8, third place 6, and fourth on down each separated by 1 point (5, 4, 3, etc.). No points will be awarded to a non-submitting driver. You do not have to announce your participation in the championship beforehand: anyone may participate in a race and be counted into the championship points, even if you do not plan on running all the races; similarly, there is no obligation to participate in every race. The driver with the most points at the end of the six races will win the championship.

These two cars are "pocket rockets," and I chose the track accordingly. Motorland seems simple, but offers several possible lines, and the cars each pose unique challenges, as well. Not only that, but you have four possible car and track combinations to practice! Please note the extra rules in place for this week, and don't hesitate to ask for clarification if something doesn't make sense to you. I know it seems complicated, but once you understand what to do, I think this week will be quite an enjoyable challenge. Have fun! :)

Hope I'm doing it right. My times are in the 46 and 56 second range.

As long as one car is on the forward track and the other on the reverse track, then yes, you're doing it correctly. 👍 I'll set up the leaderboard with an F to indicate forward and an R to indicate reverse for those who specify which car they used where, since it should be obvious which time uses the race car and which uses the road car.

The top speed setting you use on the race car is critical, and different between the two directions, at least for me. I used 180 on the reverse track (although 190 might be better since 180 hits the limiter), on which using the race car gives me a faster total time. Meanwhile, on the forward track with the road car, it appears I'll be chasing a time I set during testing for the duration of the week, since I'm having trouble matching it right now, even though I handily beat my old time in all three other combos. I think that's probably because I had used the race car right before that, and going the other direction chronologically (road car before race car) is probably wiser.

I think I made a serious error in race selection this time. :banghead: As fond as I am of the idea of having the two versions of the S800, the road car is simply too hard to get to be a good car to use.

For those who do not have it, you can find it in the Historic used car lot. If you use the NTSC version (USA, Canada, South and Central America), then it will appear there on weeks 57 and 65, equivalent to days 393-399 and 449-455. If you are past those days, it will reappear on weeks 157 and 165 (days 1093-1099 and 1149-1155), weeks 257 and 265 (1793-1799 and 1849-1855), and so on. If you use the PAL version (Europe, Australia, likely Malaysia (where Kidrauhl lives), etc.), it will come on weeks 48 and 50 (days 330-336 and 344-350), and then on weeks 148 and 150 (days 1030-1036 and 1044-1050), weeks 248 and 250 (days 1730-1736 and 1744-1750), etc.

If you don't have the car and are on, say, week 70, when it will take an extremely long time to reappear, then look back in this thread in a few hours, when I should have an alternate option posted. This is where the real frustration comes in: I can't think of anything reasonable to use besides the S500 and S600, which are almost as hard to get as the S800 - the latter can only be acquired used, and appears just three times, and the former appears used four times and is the prize for all golds on B licenses. I will probably have the S500 fully tuned in Arcade Mode on better tires so that it can turn similar times to those of the S800, and offer either as an option, with which one you pick being completely up to you. But please PM me if you don't/can't get all golds on the B license and are on an inopportune game day; I'll think of another option.

Why not use the Beat? Besides the drivetrain it's close in stats to the S800.

The Beat is a good suggestion, and I'll use it if anyone can't get the S500. 👍

You may now choose between using the S800, with specifications posted above, or the S500 with +20% power and -10% weight on N3 (RD or Road) tires. Both will turn very similar times, and you're free to select either one, but I politely request that any of you who already have the S800 use that to keep with the theme. If you need help obtaining the S500, first look at the Used Car Cycle list for your version (PAL on NTSC) in the stickied threads at the top of the GT4 forum, and PM me or post in the thread if you are still having trouble. If you can't gold the B license or are a long way from reaching a day on which either the S800 or the S500 is available, let me know and I'll give you a setup for the '91 Beat that will be competitive with the '60s cars.

Again, I apologize for the mess :banghead:, and I hope that you all don't have too much trouble getting either car. :)

I guess with a little more practice the time can be lowered otherwise this will come down to 100th (:dunce: blank on how to write it at the moment it may be right but it looks odd)

First splits
Forward - 56
Reverse - 45

Using the 800 cars!

No apologies needed. It's not your fault that I'm lazy and haven't put the time in to get the gold. Sat down and knocked out 12 of 16. About 2 hours. A challenge using AT but doable. A couple of tenths here and there and hopefully I should get it. One is only .006 off. This way it forces me to put in the time. Heck. It's not mission #34. Dang, that's the only one I don't have.

I'm glad you like it. I wasn't sure how people would take to a really slow car on crappy tires on an unpopular track. I have to ask, though... are you sure you're using Super Hard, not Hard, tires on the race car? Because a 44 is an outstanding time, and I can't quite see how to reach it. If you're using the right tires, that's extremely impressive. 👍

No; actually, it is my fault. In a race meant for anyone, not just the kind of players who have 80 golds, all the cars, and 100% completion, it's a poor decision to use a car that isn't easily obtained. I hope the B license goes well, and remember to look at videos on Youtube (ones either faster or more "accessible" - using less precise and practiced driving - than mine) if you get stuck. :)

Yes!
I was actually having doubts about my 45 yesterday so I made sure it had Super Hard tires on...

Well, I did all four combos again and improved them all, but race car reverse / road car forward is still faster for me. While I did get a 44, that's on the reverse track, which is substantially faster in both cars, at least for me. Your 44 on Forward is insane, raz!

44 (R), 54 (F)

Two more licenses down. Two to go. With luck I can knock them off tonight. I'd ask for God's help. But I heard he's bad at GT. Everything he does is Automatic. j/k

edit: Guess who has the '63 S500 now. The last two videos I needed you hadn't posted. B-5 & 16. The tube had B-5 done by complexstring in AT. So I knew it was possible.

Austin343, don't beat yourself up. How many races have you run. One mistake. Pretty good record I'd say.

Off to Motorland. Need to beat some guys. lol.

Thanks again for a fun race Austin343. You have a knack for picking a car that will be fun to drive on a certain track. Driving these "pocket rockets" (raz_10) on this course reminds me of the go carts I used to tool around in.

Having a separate internet acces from my ps2 (about 1.5 miles)
I didn't remember which cars were meant to be ran on this track.

So, I did:
R1/S800 RSC : 45 forward and reverse
N1/S800 : 55 forward and reverse
N3/S500 : 55 forward and reverse
N3/S600 : 54 forward and reverse

But for the list it's

45 (R) 55 (F)

I agree that N1/S800 Forward and R1/S800 RSC Reverse duo is faster.

I'm glad you're enjoying the combo(s), Mark. :) To be honest, I think that the reason you like most combos is either because you simply enjoy the game and the competition no matter what the car and track are, or because you expect the combo to be fun (the effect of expectation is remarkably powerful). Still, I prefer to think that I do a better job selecting than just pulling a car and a track out of a hat; I'm sure that experience in driving WRS combos taught me something about what works and what doesn't.

Very True. These are fun, short stints. Jump in for 10 laps or so. Makes for a nice break. Nice change of pace from the longer race series'(which I love) but for a different reason.

Submitted.

I'd be interseted to see the videos of your runs Austin343 . :dopey:

MadMax

I must have made this race too complicated, judging by the number of submissions. Hopefully, the trend doesn't continue for the remaining weeks.

Congratulations to MadMax86 and oldmodelt for podium times ;), and bad luck for raz_10, who seems to have forgotten to submit but who probably would have been first or second if he had remembered, and for LancerEvo7GSR, who also had nice times.

My laps (both on one video):

At the start of the lap in the race car, I was bouncing off the rev limiter, but 180 gearing seemed to make an astounding improvement in acceleration as compared to 190. With the road car, you can gain some insight into my driving style by looking at the steering wheel in the car; I really like being able to see DS2 inputs translated into actual wheel movements.

This really was the first time I drove the S800 RSC. With GT4 vast amount of cars sometimes these gems get lost. Like always, In the coming weeks I'll run these cars again for a break and might improve on those times. Never enough to catch these guys. But this week gives me bragging rights over Raz and Lancer even if it is due to attrition. lol.

As usual Austin343, nice job driving. You should sell the 343 slide technique to help out the rest of us.

Nice laps Austin343 , I could see the only difference between our cars to be
in the infield of S800/N1 combo where you kept it on 2nd gear and
I used 3rd gear for a second or less to shift the car's weight.
At the Race Car, I used 190 max speed setup.

Why were your cars 117 and 82 hp?? Can't remember if that's how they are seen in replay.. :D

MadMax

Yes - for some reason, both show as having one more HP on the replay than they do on the Quick Tune screen. I couldn't get the shift to third to work for me because it cost too much time without enough benefit. And using 190 was probably a big reason for the gap between you and me with the race car; if you're curious, try 180 and see whether you go faster. 👍
