[As always, if anyone would like to volunteer to take a picture, it will go here :)]
Thank you for the lovely photo, viperin!

Race Specifics

  • Arcade Mode Single Race
  • Power: 0% (222 HP)
  • Weight: -10% (1053 kg)
  • Tire Type: Sports Medium
  • Driving aids, transmission mode, and AI difficulty are open.
  • In Options -> Arcade, set the number of laps to two and the tire wear to Strong.
  • Standard OLR cleanliness rules apply: Since this is a city course, only contact with walls or AI cars will invalidate your run. Rumble strips and areas behind them are all part of the track.
  • Please PM me your final time by Tuesday September 15 by 11:59 pm GMT (world clock).

Series Information and General Rules

  • All six races will be run in Arcade Mode and each will last one week, with a submission deadline of Tuesday at 11:59 PM GMT.
  • The cars used will be a variety of Hondas, mostly road cars on standard (N) tires, but with race cars appearing as well. Make sure you have all Hondas, used and new, unlocked in Arcade Mode, because few of the cars I will use are available from the beginning.
  • Standard OLR cleanliness rules apply: Two wheels must be in contact with the track at all times; rumble strips are part of the track; no contact with walls allowed at any time.
  • Discussion of times in the race thread during the week will be limited to your lap time for lap 1. Total race times are not to be discussed and must be submitted to me by PM before the week's deadline.
  • Please save your best lap replay just in case I request proof, which is unlikely but possible. Generally, no proof will be necessary for the winner or for anyone else; however, I reserve the right to request a photo of a time if I am suspicious of it.
  • Each race will award points towards the overall championship standings to all who submit a clean lap/race time, with the winner receiving 10 points, second place 8, third place 6, and fourth on down each separated by 1 point (5, 4, 3, etc.). No points will be awarded to a non-submitting driver. You do not have to announce your participation in the championship beforehand: anyone may participate in a race and be counted into the championship points, even if you do not plan on running all the races; similarly, there is no obligation to participate in every race. The driver with the most points at the end of the six races will win the championship.

This race should pose an interesting challenge because of the AI. Since you may set its difficulty to whatever you want, and you do not have to win the race for your time to be valid, you have three basic choices: to set them low enough to pass before the first corner, to set them high enough that they quickly disappear into the distance and will never affect your line, or to set them somewhere in the middle so that you can benefit from their slipstream. :trouble: The last option could pay off from the improved straight-line speed, but it could also slow you down because you have to pass the AI; remember that you may not make any contact with the AI or walls regardless of the circumstances. Remember, as well, that if the AI grid you are given does not work well for you, you can exit the race and re-enter with the same AI difficulty to draw a different grid that is still approximately equally fast. Finally, remember that the car won't have as much grip at the start as at the finish because the tire wear is turned on. Have fun! :)

This will be fun! Using this FF car will be strangely addictive.:odd:
Anyways could not get my time in because PS2 was acting funny...
I should have it fixed by Friday!👍

This in the 1st post is a typo, I assume that the real deadline is Tuesday September 15th 11:59 pm GMT

This one looks promising, it's all about the "right" draft partner.

Evidently, I'm not immune to the infamous "control-c, control-v" error. :dunce: Thanks for pointing it out. 👍

I hope this can be fun, too - the trouble might be in coming down that narrow section at the end of lap two, having had an excellent draft all race, and then ruining it by clipping the inside or outside wall. :nervous: Still, I hope people appreciate the S2 tires; it won't last. :trouble:

The lap 1 time won't tell mutch of the overall time for this 2-lapper. :trouble:

But, here's my L1: 2'15.227

Will get some laps in this week.

edit: Ran some laps. Sort of like the three bears. AI diff is either too fast and the lead cars get away from me or too slow and I'm right on their tales but the draft isn't beneficial enough. Maybe I'll try my Bentley. lol.

Sorry because I have to leave Race 2... But I will do this race :) Sounds like FUN and HARD at the same time... :D

This combo has something about what makes good races, which is that racing AI cars is inherently frustrating because when you finally succeed after many failed attempts, your mindset is more of "about 🤬 time!" than of "Yes, I just put together a great lap!"

I'm certainly experiencing that now. I have a first lap of 2'13.243 (I've seen as fast as 2'13.136, but that and a similar one were both ruined by Artificial Idiocy), but the AI cars I was counting on to draft on lap 2 got into quite a mess at the final corner, when I had already passed them. That meant I had no draft until the last few hundred feet, and my lap time was very slow. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if I could get a total race time faster than this one by setting the AI to -10, even though I know a time about 1.5 seconds faster is possible with a good run with a good lineup.

Austin343 -
Last night I was browsing GTPlanet and happened to run across your race series. Thumbs up on your nice Honda challenge!

As I mentioned, I don't normally run in the Arcade mode but I thought it might be useful to learn. For example, I did not even know that there was an option to change the top speed!

So I put my Honda on a cargo plane and sent it to Tokyo, and had my test driver run some laps there to get the Integra warmed up. I've just cracked 2.16 for my first lap (a 2.15.971), so I think you shouldn't worry that my best time will be anywhere near yours. I am constantly amazed by the lap times top notch drivers like yourself can do.

My excuse for such a slow lap is that I am chasing a orange Plymouth Superbird '70 and spend more time looking at it than looking at the track.

Like you and OldmodelT mention, having the AI near you can help and hinder your laps. I have not yet decided what's best.

Respectfully,

Unless I'm mistaken, there is no top speed slider avail. for this car. I'm the slow one here and have been using either +4 or 5. I have yet to see the Superbird. What diff are you using?

OldmodelT - My initial laps were at diff. level 8, but two of the AI backmarkers kept getting in my way. The Superbird has shown up at diff. level 9, which is where I am now running. BTW, you get the "Bread Van" at the lowest diff. level.

Yes, there is no slider for this car. My guess is that only race cars have the slider. Austin343, can you help me out here? When do cars have the slider?

The "top speed" setting is available for any car that, in GT Mode, is equipped with a Full Customize transmission when stock. That means it's mostly limited to race cars, but a few concept cars (like the Tommy Kaira ZZII and the Cadillac Cien) can be adjusted that way, as well.

I'd recommend that if you're being held up very much at all, then you should switch to a higher or lower difficulty level. Generally, the benefits of slipstreaming are outweighed by having to sacrifice your line or braking point to avoid hitting another car. :)

For me:
AI -10 = hotlapping (gives faster lap 1 time)
AI +10 = drafting (gives faster lap 2 time)

Deadline in ~3 days.

Thanks for the "top speed" setting info Austin343. Sorry for such a newbie question.

I am enjoying the challenge in the Integra. I'm knocking whole hundredth's off my time! Chasing the Plymouth Superbird is fun. About every third lap the Superbird blows a corner and I end up taking fifth!

Will try it at a much higher diff. Although they tend to get away from my slow a**.

Oldmodelt - Try a difficulty setting one level harder. Its my opinion that having the AI cars just in front of you for some drafting is the fastest. I've tried level 7, thinking that I could draft more often, but the two slowest backmarkers just keep getting in the way.:yuck: At level 8, it almost works, but usually the slowest backmarker makes me blow one corner.:grumpy: So I went back to level 9 and continue to chase the Plymouth Superbird. My best time for the first lap is now down to 2.15.335, and I'm afraid that's about the lowest I will be able to do.
Good luck to the rest of you.

Did try AI on level 9 but because of my AT driving style or more likely my skill I wasn't able to catch them by the 180 turn. That .5 - 1.0 sec diff is all it took to put me out of range. Much like the old boxer who sees the opening but can't take advantage of it. Level 8 didn't give me the Superbird. Another Muscle Car but he was just out of reach before I could catch him in the 180 turn.

I was able to put together a 2'14.100 first lap but that was with S3's and +10 power/-10 wt.. Which doesn't go by the rules. It has been a fun exp. to play around with.

Hey whats up fellas...Crazy busy this past weeks, have not even tried this combo...
Maybe I'll have a go for next week...GL to all

Oldmodelt - Do you get some drafting at level 8? Stick with it as long as the cars don't get in your way.

I'm not saying that the Plymouth Superbird is the best drafting partner (its not because it blows a turn in a big way about every other lap, and then gets in my way), its just a nice car to look at (plus I imagine a huge draft is available from its wing, which...shush...(whisper) was going to be my secret way of winning this competition if none of the top notch drivers came out to play and Austin343 lost his controller). A better drafting partner would be a more modern car that did not have inconsistent laps.

While the Superbird can pull away from me on the long start/finish straight, I can actually catch him just as we start braking going into turn one. I think that the Superbird's gearing is set too short and he hits the rev limiter and reaches his top speed, just before the end of the straight (I will test my theory tonite and let you know).

Edit: I hopped in my own Superbird and took it for a spin at Tokyo in the Arcade mode. The situation is as I surmised, the Superbird only has four gears and is hitting the rev limiter at the end of the start/finish straight. The Superbird only hits a top speed of 130mph before it must begin braking.

I was unable to beat my first lap split, so I've sent my time to Austin343 while sitting in the lounge at the Charles de Gaulle International Airport (I have some time on my hands because they've lost my luggage). Are any of the rest of you flying in to de Gaulle or are you using Orly? I might need a lift to my hotel because I don't speak any French and the guide book that I brought only does English to Japanese translations.

BTW, I was recently able to knock a half second off my overall time with a good lap chasing the level 7 cars at Tokyo, so I was quite pleased with my results there.

See you on the track!

Congratulations to MadMax86 and GTsail290 for great times, and to everyone for managing to avoid both the AI and the guardrails for two full laps. 👍 I hope you all had fun finding the right lineup to draft, if you chose to do so. :)

I found an extremely good lineup to draft, but unfortunately, in most races, one of the Esprits would overcook the first corner on the second lap and be difficult to avoid as it skewed off the wall. This time, there was no such problem, as the two got tangled up with the Audi in the final corner and stayed behind on the straight, but that also meant that I had no draft on lap 2. :grumpy: I had one race going that had a very good lap 1, plus a good draft throughout much of lap 2, but I turned in too early for that brutal second-to-last corner and hit the inside wall. :ouch: I finished anyway to see what the time was, and it was a 4'14.9xx. After a lot of frustration trying to keep the AI cars from hitting me, I got this race and just accepted it as the best I was realistically going to do.

I do miss the inside guardrail at the second corner, and I don't quite make contact with any AI. The "fancy" braking technique I used at the roundabout is the first time I ever remember doing that; usually, I just use full brake, but that didn't work well with this FF car at such a long corner.

Nice laps Austin343:tup::drool:

My laps look fairly similar to yours but are just waaay slower:grumpy:

I wasn't hitting the apex in turn one, and I seem to use third gear in a couple of places that you don't. As I mentioned, I used level 7 difficulty on my two best laps. This meant that I got to draft for a lot of the race. However, the downside was that I had to actually slow down so as to not hit the slowest backmarker on the first lap during the high speed esses just before that nasty lefthander (the 2nd to last turn). So I don't end up passing the fifth place car until the last turn (the hairpin) at the end of lap one. I then closely chase the fourth place car down the start/finish straight and for most of the rest of lap two.:)

Thinking that I could knock off a quarter to half a second if I didn't have to slow down on lap one, I tried level 8 difficulty, but I did not have any better luck, and kept tangling with the last place AI.:dunce: My third best time was done on level 9 difficulty chasing the inconsistent Superbird.

Congrats to everyone else as well:tup:

As usual. I run these races later for fun and sometimes get better results. Thanks for the help.
