I don't know if GT5's sounds for the CR-Z and Insight are accurate or not, but they both sound like crap. The CR-Z sounds like a garbage disposal and the Insight sounds like a bi-plane with something caught in the propeller. I mean...Toyota makes their hybrids quite so you can hear how bad they suck, and even when you tune the Prius it doesn't sound that bad. But Honda...man. They should just stop making hybrids 'cause no one wants to drive around in a car that sounds like garbage disposal.

What do you guys think?

Three things:

1. If someone's buying a hybrid, I am pretty sure the way it sounds is the least of their concerns.

2. It probably doesn't sound like that in real life

3. Even if it sounds like 🤬 in real life, I would rather buy an Insight than a Prius

They're probably not. And the Prius certainly isn't - in GT5 it wafts along at minimal volumes, but put your foot down in a real one and it sounds like a cross cut shredder tackling a cushion.

I would ask why this is in "Cars in General," but it'd just be a duplicate of existing threads in the GT5 section anyway.

Well, I think this thread makes sense here if he was asking about whether hybrids in real life sound really as bad as in GT5.

But to answer your question, I don't think that "sounding good" is at the top of any hybrid engineer's to-do list...

I think you've completely missed the point of hybrids.

Here's a CVT-equipped CR-Z. Draw your own conclusions. Apparently the exhaust on the manual trans version is a little fruitier:

To my ears it sounds no better or worse than any other lightly-tuned 4-cyl car. Not as raspy as a Type R Honda (though the vids of tuned ones on youtube sound no different than any other Honda with a noisy exhaust) and it'll never have the character of an old Fiat twin-cam but again - not really the point of hybrids, even sporty ones.

And the Insight isn't even supposed to be sporty, so why you were expecting fireworks I'm not sure.

You could always try the original Insight, since as a 3-cyl it has a bit more of a burble than the fours.
