Strong yen, raw-materials costs hurt Japanese automakers profit.

The Wall Street Journal (4/26, B5, Takahashi) reported, "The strong yen and rising raw-materials costs took their toll on Honda Motor Co. and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. in the fiscal fourth quarter, and while Mazda Motor Corp. put in a strong performance, all three Japanese automakers issued dismal profit guidance for the coming year." Honda's 86 percent slide in net profit for the quarter "offset solid sales of its small, fuel-efficient vehicles in North America, Asia and Europe." Mazda said that "strong overseas sales" helped it to reap "healthy profit growth." But "it joined its rivals in saying it expects the yen's appreciation and high materials prices to dent profits for the current fiscal year."

The AP (4/25, Kageyama) added that "Honda saw its profit slashed by a tax, while Mitsubishi racked up costs for closing an Australian plant." The Tokyo Regional Taxation Bureau said that Honda "had not been taxed adequately for its Chinese joint ventures over a five-year span ended March 2006," and is therefore "demand[ing] additional taxes from" the carmaker. "Mitsubishi blamed the drop in earnings on the closing of its Australian factory in the southern city of Adelaide earlier this year."

The Detroit News (4/26, Tierney) pointed out that "Honda forecast a 30 percent fall in operating profit for the current fiscal year, 'which is in line with our expectations,' investment firm Nikko Citigroup said in a research note." Although Honda "produces most of the vehicles it sells in North America in the region, the dollar's weakness cuts the value of its U.S. earnings."

If you read further into the articles, you find out that Mazda is quickly rising in sales. I guess that shows that building exciting cars is the way to build your sales.

I am proud to say I contributed to Mazda's increase.

I'm glad to see Mazda performing well. It is true that building cars that people would actually want to drive is a great way to boost sales. Maybe Toyota should take note.

Added to the fact that one of Mazda's best-selling cars is built right here in Michigan too. That counts for something at least in my book...

And Ford even has a 1/3 claim to Mazda! Maybe they are helping them out a bit. (Not likely)

The new 6 is great lookin', the 3 hatchback is pretty sweet, the 3 sedan is just alright, and the MX-5, :dopey:

They got it all goin' for 'em right now.

At the same time, however, I've read that Mitsubishi recorded a 22% increase in revenue, and an overall $1 billion in overall profit in the last fiscal year; so I'm sure Mitsubishi is more than happy regardless of the slight drop for the 4th quarter.

Couldn't be because they FINALLY severed ties with Chrysler, could it?

Those ties were gone years ago, weren't they? And Chrysler dumped Mitsu because it was a sinking ship... now Mitsu's recovery tells you a little something about which end of that ship was weighing the other end down.

Well, I mean they're still "connected" with some of the platforms. I believe it was the Gallant that spun off just about everything in the Chrysler lineup at the moment, and they're all running those Mitsubishi/Hyundai four-pots. All of which generally equals crap...

Meh.

Mazda FTW. They're honestly some of the best dealers I've been to, have a stellar product line, and tend not to screw you over. Ford connections or not, it seems to have been for the good since the 1980s. And in all honesty, they've quickly become my favorite Japanese brand.

-> I'm glad that Mazda is performing well, just give big credit to whoever design those 'passionate' design themes, that guy deserves to be more famous than Bangle. All they need to do now is to revamp the Tribute as the CX-3 and the B-series as the BX-7 (USDM). :)

If they could breathe some life into that damn half-dead Ranger platform I WILL be impressed.

They can do it with some Bold (no pun intended) design, and a 6cyl that gets better mpg's than a V8 F-150. Sad realization.

Or better yet. 4cyl Diesel coupled with a new design. More torque, better mileage.

S10 looks so much better. It's not even funny.
