horsepower vs torque?

This has been bothering me for some time now. Can someone explain to me what the difference is between horsepower and torque? And I don't mean theoretically, I mean car-performance-wise? How does a car with high horsepower and low torque compare to a car with high torque and low horsepower?

I hope someone can clear this up!
 
This has been asked before and, as it is not specific to GT5 Prologue, I'm just going to lock this one.
