First, my thoughts: Watch "Hero" with Jet Li a second time, skip this one.
Where to start... It had the imagery and color that you saw in Hero. It had mediocre swordplay when compared with "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". The theatrics of "floating on air" were done better with "CT,HD" The plot twist was nice, but a bare step above useless. Throughout the movie, there were hints of an overall theme and plot, but it felt like we were being given the introduction to one chapter out of a larger novel. Thinnest of plot lines and not very well explained or thought out.
The resolution at the end was only about 25% All the previous hints about a larger story were never resolved. (highlight this Yes, she dies. But what happens of her original lover (staggering off into the woods), and her new lover (Crying over her dead body)? What happens with the generals soldiers attacking the Daggers? Was Nia the daughter of the old leader? Three days to fall in love with a man who at first introduction tried to rape you? Love is blind, but it ain't stupid. What was the history behind the Flying Daggers fued? The chick in the movie really looked like Alyassa Milano. Less than three days to go from honorable career policeman to killing your own? section for spoilers)
It seriously felt like I was reading a comic book adapation of a sidebar storyline. Long on artwork, short on story.
My suggestion? Rental, fast forward through the "running through woods" sections, then realize Hero is a far better movie and watch that one a second time.
