How are start positions determined?

thats pretty much it.
I know there are track settings "fastest first" or "based on previous results".

But even when i've entered a room without having participated in any previous race, i sometimes will have the number 1 pole position at the starting line.

Does "fastest first" mean fastest lap time during the warm up laps when people are tuning, or ...?

Fastest First- The guy that has set the fastest lap during warm up will start first. If its Nurb and not enough time to set a lap, the guy farthest down the track usually starts first, sometimes it will glitch, and put some random person ahead of everyone else, But only when no one has completed a timed lap.

Slowest first- the exact opposite of above. You can exit the pits and drive backwards to ensure you start first.

Reverse grid based on previous results- will put the winner of the previous race last on the grid and so on for the rest of the field. If you are the last to enter the room and this is the grid type selected, you will probably start the race at the front, just in front of the last place finishers of the previous race.

Based on previous results- Will start the winner of the previous race at the front of the grid, every race acts as a qualifier for the next race. Just entering a room will put you in the back of the starting grid.

Close but not quite.

Fastest first puts the top qualifier on the pole, provided he never leaves the track or the pits. If the top qualifier, or anyone else, goes into the tuning area or back to the Lounge, his time is lost and he starts over even though on his screen and others it will still show his fastest lap as the fastest lap for the qualifying session. Going back to the tuning lobby negates all qualifying efforts. This is what most people refer to as a glitch but it's not really. It's not random, it's predictable so it's a flaw in programming. It wasn't always this way, at one time you could leave the track and maintain your position but they changed it with one of the updates for no good reason I can see.

Fastest first also puts you in the order you are on the track if you haven't completed a lap as in the Nurb or other longer tracks. So if 5 people have completed laps and have the slowest recorded times and they stay on the track, they start in front regardless of their times. If faster drivers qualify but leave the track and come back and don't finish a lap, they start from 6th on down regardless of their previous lap time, and will be ordered on the grid in the order they are on the track. Furthest ahead will be 6th etc.

In reverse grid, you always start in front if you didn't compete in the last race. If there were 4 of you new to the current race all 4 would start up front but not sure how the order of those 4 is determined but there will be some logical way, it won't be random. Probably in track position or reverse track position would be my guess.

I've always assumed that the order of those who weren't in the last race(when the previous race sets the order) was simply determined by who joined either the room or the track first. I've not done a study but if I'm the only one to sit out a race and a bunch of people join before the next race I usually seem to start in between the racers and the newcomers.

Of course I could be completely wrong.

Actually, I am dead on. I just didn't include the part about leaving the track. The glitch still stands as I put it. If its nurb and the timer is set to lets say five minutes, and laptimes are in the 6 and a half minute area. It will generally put whoever is farthest out on the track first. Unless some random person who just entered the track and may still be in the pits magically gets the #1 spot (glitch I was referring to??????)

And its not going to the tuning lobby, its just leaving the track in general, for whatever reason ;)

So... your close, but not quite.

So you're dead on except you missed the part about leaving the track that you missed is by far the most important part because it explains all the "glitches" in timing that most people think are happening but which have a perfectly logical explaination. And I did say, "never leaves the track or the pits", when I referred to the tuning area after that it was just an example...not the whole explaination.:sly:

The thing that annoys me is the position on the HUD at the start of some races doesn't correspond to the actual position you find yourself in. It wasn't always like this, this bug was introduced after one of the updates.

Well no. The glitch I am referring to is the one where some random dude who joins the track as the timer is counting down magically ends up first even though everyone else is half way down the track. Your not talking about the same thing in any way, again.

There is a glitch that never let's fastest first be the front.

If you load a track, then qualify and start, it won't set the order for fastest first.

You must load a track, then start a race and quit it, then qualify then start for real.

It's very annoying in my league races.

You would think that of all the things to get right in racing game (yeah it's a racing game to me not a "driving" game as PD calls it) would be everything to do with qualifying and race start order. I mean of all the things to screw up in a racing game that has to be the worst. :grumpy: And you're right, it was correct at one time and then got screwed up again:dunce::yuck::ill::ouch:
