Hello GTP I was wondering how can I improve for tandem drifting? Through mid tandem I always either lose speed and get behind or I get nervous when me and a partner are drifting very close :scared:. If you guys could give me some tips and pointers it would really appreciated!

Try to control your speed with the throttle, and dont be afraid to tap the brake mid-drift.
(I mean tap, don't hold, you'll slow down too much)

Also, don't concentrate too much on the car in front, you still have to work out what line you're gonna take before you take it (ideally you should turn to transition slightly before the person in front, don't wait for them to switch direction in other words).

Taking that into account, just practice, you'll become more confident the more you do it.

Suzuka, even though it's horridly overused now, is good for tandem practice.

Thank you! That was my problem with the transition, I would wait for them to make the transition but I'll make the transition first. Thank you again!

Just keep doing it, don't be scared to get close. If your learning they will understand if you hit them, no big deal.

Not always, I got a whopper of a verbal beating from what I can only imagine was a 13-year-old kid when I sneezed mid-drift and bumped him off of the track.

Well I thought I would come back and let you all know that I have been practicing hard doing tandem's. I feel a lot more confident doing tandem's now and I can transition a lot better now without bumping the leader. So thank you all for your help :)!

It gets pretty hard sometimes, there are times when you gotta scratch yourself or when someone makes a joke and you laugh it gets harder to keep controll of the wheel.

I'm curious... Is it bad etiquette to roll up behind a random person and just tandem in? I've been wanting to practice my tandem drifts but don't actually know anyone yet so I've just been driving up and drifting in close with randoms. I rarely bump into them, I'm very careful. But I've had a few people get real angry. Last guy exited then came back in his tank car and rammed me until I left the room.

No it's not. But it is when they clearly make way for you to pass, and you don't. That's the difference for me :)
OR people in S13's with 350 hp behind my 700 HP isf... its not gonna work lol :s

Dunno but the couple of times I've been online and drifted with "randoms" it's been cool. Maybe I've just been lucky to never have been shouted at, rammed or kicked from a room.

Have wondered about proper etiquette too though.

I guess drifters are a bit like dogs....if it comes up to you and wags it's tail it probably wants to play:)

That person is a straight up idiot then, probably 12 years old.

I don't think it's bad etiquette to tandem behind randoms, as long as you are respectful. If you bump them, apologize. If they pull over and sort of indicate they want you to pass, pass them and find someone new.

It is considered a bit rude to "mess" with people...ie, tandem very close behind them, pass them, then pull over so they can pass, and then do the same thing over and over again. That's been known to upset a few people.

But overall, IMO, anyone in a drift room is fair game to tandem with. If they want to solo, they can go to their lounge lol. Also, if you're that concerned, ask the person in chat if they want to tandem.

Edit: Gonales brought up a good point...try to find someone with a similar car. In other words, don't come up behind a low hp car in your viper/Vette and expect to tandem. Find someone with a car that has similar speeds.

thats mainly how i learned, i just shadowed random drifters of a higher skill. it turned into a tandem battle or a long chain most times, or was told back off a little other times.

Thanks heaps guys. I try to be as polite as possible, I'm not out to make enemies. I just really enjoy drifting. And a few people have been really fun, I goes I've just been unlucky with a few.

One more thing, look out for people that are new and are still learning. There's nothing worse for someone that's learning, to have someone creep up behind them, it makes some people nervous. I usually hang back a bit, see how they drive (speed/style/skill) THEN go in closer if it looks like they're game.

I had a couple of guys suggest this when I first started trying to tandem. Enlarge the mini map so that your car and the person you are trying to tandem with is big (the triangle that represents your car that is). Can't remember what scale I set it to though, may have been 2 or 3, not sure. It helped me to keep track of where I was in relation to the other guy. The only time I ever used this was when I was trying to tandem, but it helped out a bunch, especially when I was in the lead spot or we were side by side. Just an idea to try, take care.

It seems like the only people who legitimately get pissed off if you bump them are new to drifting as well. Ive always liked the highspeed ring for tandems, the outside line always makes for good pics.

Make sure you apologize. Or join more missile rooms.

Perfect way to learn how to stick to someones door mid-drift? PRACTICE

I never followed any sort of advice or tune that anyone gave me, I just got on daily and practiced with the same people that I knew I could improve my skills.

As I got better, I started to tune my cars more precisely to give me a better feel for it as I knew what I wanted and I also played with my ABS and general setup for the controller. It all adds up and now, I can honestly say, when I try, I can do lap after lap with millimetres of a space between the 2 cars.

It's all about the Practice! No need for 8 hours a day, just do it enough so you pick it up!

Exactly. With practice comes skill there really is no other way around that. You just have to get out there and do it. If your having trouble finding people consider joining a team.

Biggest tip no only really mentions is,

While your are tandeming with somebody don't be afraid to smash the gas. For example:

Car1 is you, Car2 is leader, and ... are the space in between you guys.

Car1..............Car2, you start catching up. Car1..Car2, here is the tricky part. Look at where you are and decide what to do. Don't hit the brakes because you start getting close, think about it. If you are at a transition then yes slow down with the brakes or let of the throttle. If you are still in the middle of a turn then smash it. I will come back later with a video example but this is a quick little (Very stupid) way of explaining it. MAIN POINT: Don't be afraid to smash the throttle while tandeming. "Anyone can drift behind someone but it's much harder to drift with somebody"

-DriFtZz

Another suggestion would be to practice tandeming with someone that you've drifted with regularly. So you know their style and techniques they use in each corner, makes for better tandem practice.
