How can PS3 owners back-up their gamesaves?

I've noticed unlike GT5P, NFS Shift is preventing me from backing up my PS3 gamesave to a memory card or external HDD.

I don't know about you but I don't fancy putting many hours into this game knowing a hardware failure or corrupted gamesave will send me back to square one!
 
That's EA's way making sure everyone is working hard for their cars...

You can only back it up with a full HDD backup.
 
But even then some gamesaves aren't backed-up, and the HHD back-up won't work on a new PS3.
