Have any of you ever watched Gran Dorifto or any of the many other Gran Turismo drift videos and said "Hey hacome i can do that". Did you tune your cars to the drift settings and have a hard time trying to "drift". Well i have had a hard time mimicking those videos, yet i understand the concept very well. How are they able to go down straightawys sliding side to side and keep their speed in those turns. They are able to drift throughout the whole turn whereas i am not able to keep it. If any of you out there can mimick those videos, or created those videos are reading this, please reply as much info as you can in reference to this topic.
Btw its not really hard to drift, just take a stock car out like the R34 with ASM and TCS off, its prolly the easiest car to start with drifting, and just brake and turn at the same time, and use a lil of the hand brake, works everytime.
Try Midfield to start learning to drift, then move up.
Hey deek, I'm the author of Gran Dorifto. First, read this reply I put in another thread: http://forums.gtplanet.net/showthread.php?s=&postid=201079#post201079 . I've got some settings and a few tips there. It would take too long for me to try to explain how to drift here, because there's no simple formula for it. You just have to get a feel for it and let the car tell you how to drift it. Experiment, instead of trying all the same things.
One last thing. I didn't just fire up the PS2 one day and decide to make a drift video. It took months of practice to learn to drift consistently well. I made a much humbler first video before Gran Dorifto. Practice, and practice a lot. If you keep at it, the long steady drifts will come.
i agree with you cudaman. I have watched all the videos tuned my cars, started drifting(for the last three weeks) but i cant get that constant sliding feel for the car, probably like you have. Another thing is that i have a hard time keeping my speed through the turns and i have noticed that even in my best "drift" laps they are a lot slower than grip driving. CUDAMAN - how fast are you when drifting, compared to grip driving?
Well, there you have it. Banzai drifting is flashy and fun, but not particularly fast, since you are burning a lot of extra energy keeping the car sideways on purpose. Physics 101 - wheels roll better perpendicular to their axis, not parallel to it. Those live-action drifting videos look alot like your typical autocross run, but with tire smoke rather than speed as the ultimate goal.
What's funny is to see them using the clutch so much, rather than left-foot braking like rally drivers do.
It is good for learning car control, though. On the few occasions I have raced in Arcade mode, I always choose "drifting" style rather than "racing" because according to the book it is more realistic and gives more sliding to practice on.
neon_duke hit the nail on the head. Drifting so far sideways like that is really slow. It scrubs off speed. Kicking the clutch like they do is one way some of them sustain a longer drift. Some people seem to not do that at all though, and still drift well. I guess they are the masters.
troy - that is my friend/apprentice's video. I'm in there a few times (green S13 in a team drift, red S14 in a team drift, panda AE86 in a team drift blooper).
