How do I record a best lap time in TT's

Guys, this will make me sound stupid, but i just spent an hour on the Nurb time trial and actually got an 8:59 but all of my times stay red and i never record a "best lap time", so i can never claim my gold winnings. I did 7 full laps and only got a warning "next lap invalid" on lap 2. What am i missing? How do i record my time?
 
You're missing the fact that you cant break rules like in other games.

2 Wheels on track at all times.
No going into grass.
No collisions.

If you go offroad , cut corners , hitting a wall or whatever before crossing the start/finish line , you get a "Next lap invalid".
If you get that message , do a restart of your timetrial.
Try to do it clean before crossing the line. ;)

So, slipping out on this difficult track disqualifies my time? I don't see having an accident quite the same as "breaking rules". But thanks anyway.

But that's what i'm saying. i only got the "next lap invalid" once out of 7 laps.
 
If your time goes Red while timetrialling you need to restart too.

As I said before , if you go offroad , cut or hit walls while the timetrial your lap is invalid.

You get "next lap invalid" and red time when you make a mistake near the last corner (easy there) and up the straight to start/finish (nearly impossible there). If you make a mistake anywhere else it just disqualifies your current lap.

Keep in mind your 2nd lap should be your fast lap too, because your tires will be warmed up. Nordschleife is hard to do clean and fast ... I've put in hundreds of laps on it since the game game out and still get DQ'd about 1 of every 3 laps.
 
If you make a slip take a look at your time. If it turns red you're done. Unless you're near the end of the lap, restart.
 
This track is very difficult, learning a track properly takes about 40 laps to infinity. This will take a long time on the nordschleife 24h (25km), im only starting to get to grips with it.

To speed up the learning process try turning on the driving line, brake early try to maintain the driving line, make sure you drive carefully with smooth input to the controls, try not to be erratic or skid. Even a slight skid can lose you a couple tenths in the bend and the following straight.

Try not to leave the track at any time, you will learn nothing about a particular turn if you just lose it and spin off, go slowly at first and learn the limit of the car and track.

Remember that the driving line in the game is not the fastest way around the track, but its not too far off. When you can anticipate each section of the course turn off the driving line and make your own.

Also remember that you can de-tune cars by adding ballast and lowering the hp so it fits the spec of the time trial exactly.

Unless you watch the replays and learn how to cheat...
