How do pinsetters work?

I've bowled for more than half of my life. Over the course of that "career," I have had many mysteries related to bowling both asked (why was I so good the Mortal Kombat at the bowling alley, but not the Street Fighter II?) and solved (I'm a button mashing fool), and some even sort of solved (how bowling scores actually work).

However, one thing that has always intrigued me was how the pinsetters (the things that replace the pins) actually do their job. Not helping is that the bowling alleys I've been to have almost always had a sliding door that covers everything up while the pinsetters are at work. I've seen some up close on the way down and up, but I am totally in the dark surrounding how they actually work. I once thought that they merely used suction, but decided that couldn't be right when some pins move around but don't fall over.

Does anyone else have any answers or ideas surrounding this mystery?
