We've all had tough times in our lives and most of have some sort of coping mechanism to make life seem easier, to keep our emotions under control, and to help ourselves move on.

So GTPlanet, how do you cope with the tough times?

Blake

Talk about it with friends or family and wait it out, things get better with time (most of the time).

Alot of the time i don't :(

Friends and family make it easier though.

It just takes time. I have to wait it out.

I suppose just doing the things I like or am comfortable with and shutting out everything and everyone else. I do see things that are wrong with that and my friends say the same thing but that's how I am so I guess I'm screwed.

Friends and excersize (especially hockey) help.

If it is agression music and some contact sport. Be it rugby karate or sometimes football. Karate is also good because it stops my mind wandering.

Anythig else I just talk.

Yup, seem to forget everything on the weekends.

Then during the week, i have forgotten everything about the weekend!

It's not the best solution though 👎

Second...

Strangely enough - work has been an absolute bastard these last weeks - I'm not sure I'm getting fired or not - and yet, I haven't had the urge to drink myself into the fence.. Most odd indeed...

For some reason, I'm perfectly fine with getting sacked..

play games....

i find talking too close freinds is easier and more productive than talking too family

I think once you get into that mind-set its time for a new career direction, i suppose its a question of jump or be pushed?

I find talking to someone really helps. Just holding it in just damages me more and more but it's hard to tell someone sometimes.

Play games
That's temporary for me. Afterwards everything just comes back to me again.

Lots of different techniques.

Booze
Sleep
Friends

Underlying all that is what has kept me alive in the toughest moments is a deep rooted feeling of a purpouse with my life. I am here for a reason. That takes you through almost anything in life. Logotherapy, anyone?

I drink a lot and have a string of cheap, meaningless one night stands with beautiful women.

And if for some reason I'm out of hot cocoa and can't get on my computer to search for porn, I usually just settle for watching Beaches on late night TBS and crying my eyes out.

You'd be better off talking to somebody real - who could actually give you some advice :trouble:

I thought this thread was about how people get through the tough times. Not the existance of God.

I don't agree with some of the other ways mentioned. But that's not for me to say or judge because that's not what this thread is about.

Look for a way to directly influence the situation. Analyse, plan, execute.
That, and procrastinate.

I don't know; in 40 years I haven't found anything I couldn't work my way through by just trying my best and accepting the outcome.

:D Beaches (1988) - privileged rich debutante and a cynical struggling entertainer share a turbulent, but strong childhood friendship over the years. Notoriously sappy chick flick (see also, Steel Magnolias or Fried Green Tomatos).

Bette Midler > All.

In all seriousness though, I DID used to drink a lot and act like hell and all that, but as I got older, I found it just didn't do the trick like it used to.

When I was a teenager, I'd steal my parent's car and drive somewhere remote in the middle of the night and just walk around while trying to sort out what was bothering me. I think the combination of sleep deprivation and exhaustion cleared my head somehow ---nothing seems to bother me when I'm really freakin tired.

Later, I got on the night train like many do. No help there. Well, no long term help anyway.

These days, I'm very lucky to have a loving wife I can go to for support if I need it. A good family life can go a long way towards supporting you in any tough times you may have.

Duke, as usual, is right. There is no magic solution. Sadly, the best way to work through tough times is learning by experience.

Sorry, didn't mean to upset anyone with that comment

Good Friends. People that understand when you don't want to talk about it and just focus on something else, or when you do want to talk about it and they listen.

Either way, I have a couple people that I go to for such support.

Play Gran Turismo (:

I try different things for different situations. Sometimes a drive out into the country-side helps. I spend time with my dog now. My girlfriend / fiance / bride / wife are usually pretty helpful. I do play video games to get my mind off things. I used to go for a jog, but I don't do that much anymore - need new running gear.

Solituid / meditation work pretty well. Sit and think. You need a strong foundation in "Everything is OK - life goes on" before you start spending too much time by yourself, though. Otherwise your mind will play tricks on you and you'll spiral into depression.

Play Gran Turismo (:

Depending on the race, and the skill of yourself, this could upset you some more. Nothing like loosing when your already annoyed. Speically if its only by .10 of seconds.

I play games like Rez and Frequency. They can really suck you in and you end up 'zoning',you know that feeling you get sometimes when it's just pure concentration.
Oh, and talking to god helps
