How does one determine general intelligence? Is it how many languages one knows? How they speak? What they remember? Etc??? ???????

Why an IQ test? Isn't that a bit typical, there are some intelligent people who are horrible at taking tests, and some extremley idiotic people who test very well.

IQ test usually help to determine thing academically, not how good you are at mechanics or something. You are going to get a whole bunch of answers because everybodies opinions will be different. I don't think there is one true way to measure peoples abilities.

Intelligence, I would think, is how well you can respond to certain situations in a logical manner. Eg., you're house catches on fire and you call 911, get kids, stay low, and evacuate immediately as opposed to running around screaming your head off. I guess it's a compilation of how well you understand things that are explained to you, as well as logical thinking/reasoning. Hard to put a finger on it.

And I think this belongs in the Opinions forum.

[edit]

"Abilities" is kind of misleading. You could be Stephen Hawking, one who has very limited abilities, but is an astrophysicist.

I think it all depends on what you consider intelligence. You could be intelligent and pick things up well in the sciences but might be terrible at music or art. It really is a personal idea.

Music or art is a talent, not an intelligent thing. Some peopl have it, some people don't, others just don't like it. Same with most sports and games, people have genetic advantages.

^As others have said, that is your opinion, you may think art or something is a talent, others may not. Peoples definitions of itelligence and talent are different.

IQ measures the capacity someone has for learning, or something like that.

I would consider intelligence as the amount of knowledge one has about his surroundings as well as how one puts that knowledge to use.

IQ tests aren't really that great. According to one popular IQ test I have an IQ of 145, which is 12 points higher than that of Albert Einstein. Even people with very high IQs can be looked at as unintelligent depending on how much they put their knowledge to use. Some of the smartest people can also be the stupidest.

Why I ask this question: I took a recent IQ test at a local facility when I scored 187 in my 'general' intelligent quotient. When I requested that same test again I only scored 153. I was confused, a bit hurt I hope to God my true quotient is the previous score. I have my doubts. :(

I think I was just lucky on the first, I thought so hard my blood boiled beneath the flesh of my cheaks. I now have a headache and am frustrated.

IQ tests are not good a determining ones intelligence. I've had scores as low as 118 to as high as 171. I do not believe any of the scores are correct because intelligence cannot be "measured".

Intelligence is defined as:

Ability to acquire, retrieve, and use knowledge in a meaningful way; to understand concrete and abstract ideas; and to comprehend relationships among objects and ideas.

The definition suggests that there is no way intelligence can be quantified. There are too many variables, and as a result, IQ tests should only be used as a guide -- not a definitive solution.

As far as the discrepencies in your test scores are concerned, that is expected -- because IQ tests are not accurate.

Hope this helps.

Like me for example... :sly: j/k

Um, actually... IQ tests are made to measure the ability to adapt to certain situations, as fast as possible (that's why these test are separated in parts, and they are timed... well, at least the one I did was).

I have a parrot that now has padlocks on it's cage. First he figured out how to take the door lock apart. We came home from work and found him on top of the cage, the lock in pieces in the tray. We put a spring lock on the cage door. It took him three days to figure that one out.

We had to resort to masterlocks because friends of our have watched their Cockatoo attempt to manipulate a combo lock.

Our big greenwing macaw can associate action and reaction. They lunge at someone with an open beak and it scares the crap out of people. The Macaws take joy in that. How do we know? Because they mimic my wifes laughter when the person jumps.

What is intelligent? I've seen so many people on this site that can't read a Read this: thread. They can't spend 3 minutes reading or searching before posting. Yet they can operate a keyboard.

My parrot can't operate a keyboard, but it knows what broccoli looks like and will toss it out of the bowl. I've seen parrots that want to attack someone so bad, they'll bite the person they love. Yes, I have had stitches in my ear from one.

How do I define intelligence?

Exersizing the desire and willingness to expand ones current knowledge.

I want to learn more about your parrots!

Well said! 👍

Intelligence cannot be:

Ability to acquire, retrieve, and use knowledge in a meaningful way; to understand concrete and abstract ideas; and to comprehend relationships among objects and ideas.

as proponents of eugenics mostly use that rhetoric.
