How do you hold the steering-wheel?

The correct technique is 10 and 2 o' clock but my arms are long so when i do hold the wheel with both hands it is more "between 9 and 10" and 1.

I have gotten into a bad habit of driving with my right hand (bear in mind RHD car) at 1 o' clock and my left hand resting on my left knee with the wheel between thumb and forefinger. Either that or right hand at 1, and left hand on hand brake. This usually plays out in traffic, but the onset of a long bend or something means i definitely use two hands.

Bad habits.

:).

Most of the time at 10 and 2. Though, if I'm on a familiar road, I only use my right hand at 12 (gangster style) or no hands at all.

i hold it at ten and two, i have to for know since i gotta do it in the test (im only on my learners) but knowing in me i would probably drive like that anyway since im use to it.

Most of the time 10 and 2. Sometimes on the highway righthand at 1 and left on the drivers side door armrrest. In town in heavy trafic often left hand at 10, right hand on the gear shifter.

For the day-to-day grind, I am at 10-n-2 90% of the time. 8-n-4 if my arms get tired in stop and go traffic or freeway drone cruising.

For autocross, I have one hand at 8 or 4, depending on the next turn and the other hand free to stage for the turn --a variation on the "shifty hands" style.

Left hand at eight or 10, right hand on the gearshift. (When I took driver's ed, I already knew how to drive a stick. I would put my had on the automatic shifer while I drove out of instinct, and this woudl piss them off to no end).

Left hand at 9. I'm not gangsta enough for the left hand at 12 or 1 combined with a lean.:(

Gear lever and 2. :D When I've got both hands on the wheel they'll be at 10 and 2

I have to keep moving around - can't sit in the same possition for extended periods. But what seems to be the most comfortable is (four spoke wheel) holding the bottom right wheel spoke with my right hand and put my left hand on the door window. When I'm worried about traffic or in an unfamiliar place I definitely go 10 and 2. There is no better way to control your vehicle.

A friend of mine holds the wheel with his left hand and the arm rest with his right hand. It's SO DAMN ANNOYING. When he goes into right turns he pulls his body with the arm rest. Would it not be easier to hold the wheel? And have better control? What the ****.

Well I normally have my right hand shifting gears and my left hand on 10:30 almost 11 o'clock. After every change of the gear my right hand remiains around 2 o'clock.

Oh ... yeah ... occationally I have to shift gears too (: At which time I put my left hand on the wheel (10 ish) and my right hand on the stick. When I'm done shifting I go back to my lazy wheel holding possision.

Have you blown any engines when you don't shift ???

No ... but I did rag the hell out of my last car's clutch before I finally smashed the front end into the back end of a Buick.

ewww. . . that is the suck

I got one of those stories, which would win in a crash, A cadillac or a 97 civic????

Laws of Physics my friend. No two objects can occupy the same space at the same time. (:

Density rules in the war of matter. Your little Civic is a light weight.

And you lost my friend, My little lightweight Civic got its tiny bumper stuck in the vertical Tail-lights of the Cadillac causing the whole rear bumper to be replaced where-as my civic got two grooves scracthed deep in the bumper which I never replaced. . .

1 for lightweight and 0 for density :D

kinda like these tail lights and bumper on the caddy but a generation before it I believe when the brake light was all plastic and the metal was only on top and bottom with the bumper

Usually I switch between - Left hand at 12 (gansta style!) actually..more like 11ish- and like 10 and 2.
In the warm months it's usually - Right hand at 2, left hand on the door (window open).

you probably wouldn't want you hand at 12 o'clock if you have airbags. . . Guaranteed way of breaking more then your hand in an accident. . . that would suxor.

10 and 2, here. Seat bottom fairly far back, but seatback upright so I have about a [edit] 100-110 [/edit] degree angle to my elbows.

I put my hand back on the wheel between every shift, except between launch and shifting up to 2nd.

Don't you mean right elbow at 6, right hand at 2, chin at 10, and left armpit on the windowsill? And seat back at the "lie down I want to talk to you" angle?

What the hell is with that? Who would have thought that "lifestyle fashion culture" would extend as far as dictating your driving position?

Village idiots, every last one of them,

I usually drive with my hand at 12 or so, and my right arm resting on the center console. I've been driving like that for almost as long as I have been driving. Probably a bad habit, but I do it without thinking. When I'm in a tight spot, turning, changing lanes or something, I'll have both hands on the wheel.

Pretty much at the 9 and 3 at all times. Sometimes I go to just one or the other, or just one hand. As for turning, I try to stick to the Karbone (Something that starts with a K, I think) style of turning.

I usually have one hand on 12, 6, or 10. Pretty much the only time I use two hands is when I'm on the highway.

 At my chapter, some kids actually tried autocrossing in that position. DNF'd every time and left early. What dorks.

...and they left early, probably feeling bitter and harboring a grudge about how stupid autocross is.

No kiddin. I generally find the detractors of autocrossing are simply medicore drivers who can't handle being beat by someone with a "slower" car.
