How do YOU pronounce these names?

I'm not asking for the correct pronunciation of each name, I just wanna know how you all pronounce these words. I pronounce the dealers' names like this:

Audi as in awdee (i hear a lot of people say owdee)
Alfa Romeo as in alfa romayo
Jaguar as in jagwar (but recently i've been calling it jagyoour)
Peugeot as in poozho
Renault as in renolt (but i've been calling it renau as of late)
Pagani as in pagani
Panoz as in panoze (i used to call it panoise)
Daihatsu as in dotsoo
RUF as in ruff (i don't say the letters R-U-F)
Porsche as in porsh
Esprit (the car from Lotus) as in espree
Opel as in opell ('e' as in "tell")
Tommy Kaira as in tomee kira

Oh yeah say Mitsubishi over & over again. It sounds weird.

Renault= ruhnauw
Peugeot= Peujgoh (eu: ehhh)
Tommy Kaira=Tommee KaijyRha

Peugeot = Per-joh ('r' not pronounced, soft 'j' as in 'jus')
Renault = Ruh-noh
Pagani = puh-ganny ('ganny' like 'granny' without an 'r')
Panoz = pay-nose
Daihatsu = Die-hat-sue
RUF = rough
Porsche = poor-sher
Esprit = ess-pre
Opel = opal (the gemstone)
Tommy Kaira = Tommy K-aye-ruh

Of these, Audi is definitely 'ow' not 'or'-dee. And Porsche is best pronounced by deleting the 'c' and adding an 'r' to the end. These are German words, and this is how they are pronounced by Germans.

Jaguar is definitely a three-syllable word featuring no 'w's! And the Panoz one is definitely pay-nose, I know this, because this is how the man pronounces his name in the flesh.

The others I may be wrong on. Still looking for a French person to come up with the definitive 'Peugeot'!

Audi= Ow-dee or Aw-dee

Alfa Romeo= Al-fa Ro-may-o

Jaguar= Jag-warr or Jag-yoo-r or Jag-yoo-er

Peugeot= Pyoo-goh (pronounce the j similar to the way that the J in the name Jacque is) or Poo-goh

Renault= Ren-noh

Pagani= Pah=gah-nee

Panoz=Panoj (j sounding like the start to jacque) or Panoz (say z normally)

Daihatsu- Dye-hat-soo or Dah-ee-hat-soo

Ruf= roof

Porsche= Por=shah or Por-shuh (sh end uh (as in uh what?) together)

Esprit=Espree

Opel=O-pell

Tommy Kaira= Toe-mee or Tah-mee Kay-ra or Ki (rhymes with hi)-ra or Ka-ee-ra
 
Opel for me is Opol as in hole
Jaguar is Jagwar(on Speedvision, the british guys say Jaguare)
Mazda I pronounce Maazda(but If heard Maizda, which is incorrect)
Diahatsu is Dyehatzoo
Esprit for me is with the "t"
Nissan for me is kneessawn(I've heard Nissan as in "iss")
Pagani is Pugany(hard G sound)
Peugeot for me is Pyujsho(on Speedvision, I've heard Pojo)
Porsche is Poorsh or poorsha
Lancia is Lanseeuhh(as in Land)(I've heard Luaancheeuhh)
Citroen is Sitrown

And Aluminum is Aluminumm, but the british say Al you min ee umm :rolleyes:
 
My apologies to my British, Australian and New Zealand friends, but your habit of adding R sounds is not always proper. Example= Peugeot= Per-goh

Yeah, me too! If the commentator on the WRC videos is correct, it's pronounced "Pojo" (with the j pronounced as it is in the name Jacque). But, it will always be "Poo-jo" to me. :)

Peugeot in American is Poojo (jo almost like show) But if you watch WRC, its pojo
Jaguar in American is jagwaar
daihatsu die-hot-sue

i cant explain the sound, but in muppet show, the swedish Chef, uknow????

its (pe'jeux) "eux" is like EAU in Eau de Parfume!!! dig it???

and alfa romeo ist NOT something with MAYO, remember there ARE other contries than USA!!!!
 
The italian language has a connection to the Latin language, in most cases an e in latin is said as ay, and while that may not be the case in Italian everytime, since I am not fluent in Italian I will presume that it is in this case; so Ro-May-O. I doubt it is Alfa Romeo, Romeo, where for art though Romeo?

i remember reading somewhere that RUF is run by a guy named Alois Ruf, so it's a name not an acronym. i think it's pronounced like "roof" - the american way (like "boot"), not the british/oregonian way (like "soot").

how come? i don't have a problem with pronouncing it "porsh" (that's how i usually say it), but it seems to me that if someone wants to pronounce it the way the founder of the company and namesake did, then they shouldn't get flak for it. same goes for Ruf.

does anybody know how germans pronounce Audi? i really hope it's "ow-dee".

I dunno, for some reason I just don't like the sound of it...

I mean, that would be like everyone in America calling Rome "Roma", or Spain "Espana". Does that make sense? I didn't think so...:blush: Oh well...

i don't know if the analogy is accurate, since Spain and Rome are translations of a name, whereas Porsche is the actual name with translated pronunciation. so another example would be that we're arguing the pronunciation of Bayerische Moteren Werke and not of Bavarian Motor Works. if you're saying the former name, i don't see a problem saying it right.

in any event, i guess i too get annoyed at non-native speaking people who get all excited about accurate pronunciation, like they say:

San Jose: "Sahn HHOHSS-ay" instead of "San Hose-ay"
Espana: "Eth-pan-ya" instead of "Ess-pan-ya" (freaky catalonians)
Mexico: "Meh-HEE-co" instead of "Mexico"

there was a hilarious SNL skit with Bob Costas and Jimmy Smits where everyone was uptight about pronunciation, and it got progressively more absurd:

Mexico: "Meh-HEE-co"
Bob Costas: "Bob COE-stass"
Jimmy Smits: "Jimmy Smeets"
Camaro: "Ca-MAH-do"

oh yeah, and
Some Guy: "Who do like in the big game today?"
Bob Costas: "Um, Green Bay."
Some Guy: "What?! Against TOMM-pa Bay?! Eeen TOMM-pa Bay?!?!?!"

The guy on speedvision from Porsche called it "poor-sha" so I am going with that. The annoying commentator for WRC races on SV does the best pronunciations. peaugot as pow (as in "bow") joe.
 
And the same guy that says pow joe also says Hi un die, for Houndia(SP? it's too early for me).
 
No one has yet got Citroen quite right. This is a three syllable word.

Sih-TRO-UN

The last two syllables are stressed equally.

My high school French teacher was from France and owned a Citroen and a Pig-out, and this is how she pronounced it.

By the way, she also pronounced Peugeot this way:

P(y)oo-ZHO

But she acknowledged that even in France people called them Pig-outs.

You forgot one thing...the R is a rolled r, if you know what i mean, like that thr sound which the vibrating tongue on the roof of the mouth thing...
