Currently i race on a big, beautiful Samsung LED DLP 54 incher. However using this tv is not optimal anymore because of my wheel setup. Last game I ever played in standard definition was, well GT4. My question is though, how does the game look in 480? I've heard a lot of stories about text being difficult to read and whatnot in other games because most games now are optimized for those big resolutions, and I was wondering if GT5 has any problems like that.

The text is difficult to read but the menus feature a "zoom" button with which you can *drumroll* zoom in on the menus, making it easier to read. Also, I don't know if this is the case with newer games, but the game will display in 16:9 aspect ratio whether your 480 TV can support it or not. This doesn't mean that the image will be distorted, just that you'll get black horizontal bars on TVs not supporting widescreen.

Back when I rubber banded I usually changed the video out settings to composite at SD and analog audio to lower the console's workload while my rubber band raced for me.

I used to play GT5 in standard def before I got an HDTV. The text is quite hard to read but PD have thoughtfully included a "Zoom" feature. The biggest difference is obviously the graphics, they look good on a standard def TV but you can't see as much detail and the colours aren't as vibrant. When I switched to an HDTV, the difference amazed me, HDTV makes the colours look much more vibrant and you can see every little detail in the game. So basically, if you care about graphics, then stay with the HDTV, but if you don't really care about graphics, then switch to the standard def if you still want to.

Also depends heavily on the quality of the non-hd tv!!

NOT all screens are created equal, in any class/type.

I use an OLD CRT monitor on my main computer, because I would have to spend a LOT more money to get the same quality in a slim monitor.
Television screens have similar issues. Some are better than others.
My dentist's hd tv in the waiting room is awful! Could be the settings are off, but also could be a cheaper type. I don't know.

The tv we're using now isn't hd, and isn't even huge. But it's a pretty good quality tv. The game is perfectly playable. (zoom is helpful because I'm nearsighted)

And gt5 looks WAY WAY WAY better than gt4 did!!!! My bf hooked up the old gt4 (to compare) - and now that looks all choppy, and the motion looks like it gets interference in the image (which I hadn't noticed as much before playing gt5). Gt5 looks WAY more realistic than gt4.

So if graphics aren't your super priority, and you're going from a lower-end hdtv, to a higher end non-hd tv... the difference might be something you can live with.
If you have a high end, large hd tv, and you're thinking of going to a much smaller cheap non-hd tv... then it may be unbearable.

As Coxis said you get the black horizontal bars so you will play in wide screen mode (16:9) even if your TV is 4:3. Of course you have the zoom in function (R1) but it's a little bit annoying, especially because you are using the right analog to navigate on the screen. Also, sometimes the zoom in function isn't enough, especially in sub 29" TVs.

Personnaly, i only use an SD TV for the B-Spec mode...

Graphically, the SD mode kills all the potential of GT5. The graphics are more close to PS2 than PS3 and sometimes i have the impression that Standard cars look better in SD mode (guess what, they were made for that mode.. but this is off topic).

Anyway, i would compare the SD mode in GT5 to playing a game on PC in 640x480 res while your graphic card allows you to confortably play in 1650x1050 mode.

First of all it looks the same!I'm VERY DISSAPOINTED that even shadows are same (blocky) and framerate is unstable. What the hell?
It also very depended on your TV, because today TV's are bad of displaying at resolutions other than their native (1080p), so you can see distorted image.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll just look into buying a smaller HDtv or maybe even a monitor that has HDMI.

Yeah do that.CRT is crap and it is 2011 they are cheap now.If your monitor has DVI just go buy the DVI to HDMI adaptor and get an HDMI cable.problem solved.

To be honest, It doesn't make much difference to me. Yes HD is sharper, clearer etc. but you can adjust a standard TV to make it look better.

Only annoying thing is that I cannot see how fast I'm going when using the cockpit view and no HUD. Dials are blurry.

I don't think it looks any better than GT4 on an SDTV, to be honest. Whether that is a problem is up to you.

I agree, and it makes the menus look to cluttered and cramped. GT5 is designed for the HD experience.

Anyone comparing it to GT4 is just being sarcastic or downright silly. I got news for ya people, go put GT4 and see what it really looks like, it's not the magical game you remember it to be, and on SD premium models etc.. look considerably better than GT4, not too mention general gameplay, replay etc..

But god almighy, why on earth would you want to play it on SD ? Especially when you have the means to play in HD ? I only ever play in SD if i take my ps3 to a mate's house, and i'm horrified by the difference everytime.

The ironic bit is that GT4 runs at a far more consistent framerate than GT5 could ever dream of running at.

I've played GT4 since GT5 came out. It has nowhere near the amount of graphical glitches that GT5 has. It doesn't look better, but the majority of the time it doesn't look any worse.

I have a question, could you lower the console's workload by switching off the TV and just letting it grind?

Thanks in advance.

It looks better than GT4. Text is small but as has been said you can zoom in. Biggest problem is if your TV is 4:3 because you get a narrow field of view or big lines top and bottom

I can't play on it as I am so use to HD it hurt my eyes in SD

Who ever is smoking the bong, put it down.
Your eyes are closing.
1080P vs 480
High Def vs CRT
I play on a 50" Sony Bravia that sits 3 feet in front of me.
There is no way in hell that GT4 even comes close.
Nor does a 50" CRT of any make.

The thread has veered off course, so will I. The HDTV is leaps and bounds ahead of even my flat screen CRT Sony Trinitron. I could use progressive scan 480p on it, but still crap looking compared to any HDTV.

On topic, GT5 is still playable in SD, but you are missing what PD spent all its time on, graphics. We all know the game aspect is horrid, but its damn pretty.

Not so good quality on this one, Played GT5 on this since release, for 3 months, the biggest problem was the screen flickers and the image noise.

After playing FC, SCC, SV8 and other games with medium visual quality on 37''1080P
for 2+years, the old Goldstar CRT did not feel like a big downgrade with GT5 on the display.

This was a lot better, had no screen flickers and the colours and image qualyty was so much better.

Now I use a 46'' LG 1080p, the image is grate, but I still miss the CRT's priceless blacks.

It was much easier to concentrate on a 21'' screen than on a big one

It relay depends on the TV, a good CRT can bee a option, if its widescreen and HD then the menu will be displayed better.

Toranado - I don't know about the framerate or anything, but when I say choppy, I don't mean laggy or whatever... my bf tells me it's called "flicker". I get pretty much zero flicker with gt5, and now it's obvious how much flicker gt4 had - a LOT. I don't know what you mean exactly by "graphical glitches". But to me, everything in gt5 is just more soft in the lines, more rounded, and therefore a little more realistic. (Except for some standard cars where at certain angles I see big blocky problems. Some standard cars are better than others, I think. A few are really really bad!)

My point wasn't to go get a crt monitor. (You probably can't.) I just meant I haven't yet seen an lcd hd monitor with good colour for under $1200. LCD just has problems with colour for some reason. Add in trying to print things correctly, and the problem gets worse.

Though if you're not fussy about colour, you're not going to make any print projects on it, and you're not planning to use it in a darkened room, and you're not going to be too far away from the screen, (or if you're colour blind! lol) this probably won't be a big deal to you. You can probably be very happy with an inexpensive monitor, or a less expensive small hd tv (or even a non hd tv of good quality)

My point was that you shouldn't expect to get a playable game on just any old non hd tv. Some are just better than others.

I have an old (flat screen crt) small non hd tv in a spare room and you couldn't play ANY video game on it at all!! It's BAD. Gt4 is unplayable on it let alone gt5. (I wouldn't like to think about what games would look like on a cheapo lcd non hd tv. eeep.)

That's clearly not true of all non-hd tvs.

So really the question was - is it possible. The answer is not as simple as yes or no. It's input how bad the tv is to tell you how worse it's going to be (comparatively).

If you have a big hdtv all set & already in use, I don't know why you wouldn't use it... except if your spouse doesn't want some big cockpit set up in the family room. hahaha

Like Forza 3.

Alright, now that you're done with your joke post, do you have anything intelligent to add?

I mean, I'm sure that playing in SD isn't going to make GT5 look better so that it matches FM3, so.... *shrug*

If playing GT5 in SD can make this...
gt501a.jpg

look like this...
fm301.jpg

or if it can make this...
gt502a.jpg

look like this...

I'm definitely going to start playing GT5 in SD.

It looks like GT4, more or less. I hooked up my PS3 to an old TV at my girlfriends place and it was fine. It was difficult to read the little descriptions and whatnot, but that's not the end of the world. You can still race well enough.

You're kidding. My home set is an SDTV and GT5 definitely looks a lot better than GT4. The environments are similar, yes, but the atmospheric effects are much better, especially in the dark or the wet.

The quality of the cars themselves is a lot better... even with the worst standards.

I've played GT5, GT5P, Fallout and GTA IV on this TV. The text is a pain on games like GT5 and Fallout (though Fallout has a better text size), but at least you get a zoom option.

I also play on a 14" CRT when the kid and missus hog the big CRT. That's a pain. Can't read anything, even with the zoom feature, but at least you can race.

Well, it's a very old set and I have to be honest - I haven't played GT4 in years. So the switch from my LCD HDTV to the old CRT at my girlfriend's place sure felt like I was on a PS2 again. Anyways, the main points are the same. You can race just fine but it's damn near impossible to read anything. 👍
