How does this work?

I've spent the last several days unable to log on to any forum but the Opinions forum. Don't know why but the others just don't seem to load. But while I've been sitting and watching the index page load at the speed of a glacier I noticed some weirdness in the loading of images and was wondering why something happens. Look at the left menu on the index page. Look at the various ways it loads. How does that work?

I'm not sure, have you played with any Internet Options? It could also be a browser issue?

EDIT:

Try deleting your cookies, Internet Files, and then try logging in.

It's just displaying the way your browser is opening connections to the server. Because the server is apparently experiencing high load, the number of connections your browser can open to it is reduced. Each image requires its own connection, so you can see how a reduced number of simultaneous connections could cause issues with the way images load.

Then, your browser tries to render the page when it's part-loaded. Actually, it will tend to do this as soon as it has all of the core HTML file.

Super-Supra's suggestion will actually exacerbate the problem, because it will mean that all images will have to be pulled from the server rather than from your browser's cache.

It looks like there are layers of images. Why would so many images be used when one would do the trick. Could this be why I have such consistent trouble with load times when I'm at work?

Excellent question. I'd think there would be a way to dress the main page with fewer images, they'd have to be bigger images which would probably take a prolonged time to load too, but it'd be much more simple in the long run I think.

Because Jordan went for a liquid layout (well, semi-liquid anyway, since it does break at a certain point). In browsers that allow you to make the text bigger/smaller, the height of the image well will change with the height of the text, which is impossible with one image for the well. All of this will be moot though when SVG becomes standard. :D (In, like, 2040)

hey guys, i cannot seem to attach a file to any posts. i have reduced the size of the image, although i have seen other people's attached files that take up entire pages. please help with this, as i would like to put some freakin' pics. on here!!!:banghead:

You need to check the actual file size. If it's more than allowed, it won't freakin' work.

On another topic...

I've recently discovered that when GTP won't load for me, whic is most of the time when I am at work, clicking the stop button will make the page finish loading. It works like this. I click on a link to a forum, the blue bar and title appear right away, then the top row of links trickle in, slowly, and it usually hangs right there and never finishes. But I discovered that if I click the stop button on IE, the page magically appears in an instant. Anyone else experience this or have any explanation as to why clicking the stop button would do that?

I use the stop button trick in certain cases. If for example I'm just looking to go into a link that's on a page that just sits there and idles like you say, I'll "stop" and hopefully the page will show up with the link I'm looking for, it's a bit of a gamble as sometimes hitting the button will show like only 50% of the page. Must depend on how long you leave it sit there.

What kind of connection do you use at work? I use a dial-up connection, and I'm pretty sure it's because of it that I have to 'stop' a page sometimes.

Hmm... lets see... can see animations on animated gifs., some pics won't load at all on dial-up or hs, and I don't get any reply mail for posts. Other than that it's cool... :odd:
