How is Gymkhana when using a wheel?

...cause I was just wondering if it might work nicely or maybe it reminds of drifting with a wheel at ...erm... another recent racing game. :nervous:

I will defiantly be giving my opinion on this later when I get it. I can imagine it will be much more fun/difficult than just drift, because your ARE doing more than just drifting :) I think it looks fun as crap, and way more fun and challenging with a wheel.

The GameTrailers review touches up on it being a bit tricky.

Its really good actually. I turned the weight option of my wheel down to make it easier/faster. Their is also a green line aid helps to get the hang of it and can be turned on/off.

I can't say for certain - I'm only going by the Team VVV preview videos. But apparently going with the default settings is good to begin with. The gymkhana cars appear to be much more sensitive to changes and to your inputs than the rally cars, so it's best to get a feel for the mode before you start tinkering about. Especially since tinkering will lead to your car handling better whilst doing certain tricks, but if you do them too often, they become stale and are worth less points. So there's no one setup that is going to lead to you performing better in the sense that it will guarantee you more points. It's also worth considering that the Battersea Compound has several stages that need to be unlocked to create a full-scale playground; what we've seen in most preview videos is only the basic stuff. It also looks like the Monaco Waterfront has new sections that open up, and the L.A. Coliseum may have sections that open up, too.

I generally go for:
-low downforce
-Short gear ratio
-low ride height
-stiff suspension
-strong diff
-1 click of rear brake bias to help get the car turned in.

Seems to work. I just use my normal wheel settings as well. Steering weight 70 I think, and FFB 80. I'm on a DFGT and I seem to be alright at it. I just got the over 500000 points trophy for one of the Gymkhana competition things.
👍

very much so fun on the wheel, although you're going to wanna use to controller for the most part- it wrecks the wheel.

But regular racing us fine on the wheel? I've got the DFGT and would assume hours of gymkabaxhshsh us going to be harsh on it. Just don't want to wreck it on regular dirt tour and online

To be honest, this whole game is gnarly on a wheel lol my thumbs are sore already from thunder-gripping. Should be ok though.

I just have to say how amazing this game is on a wheel. DiRT 2 was awful with one, so this is all very nice.

You were doing something wrong if you think Dirt 2 was awful with a wheel.
It was great fun!

How will gymkhana wreck the wheel? It's not that rough on it.
Just wondering.
My DFGT is still in warranty so I'm fine. :P

I really hope Gymkhana doesn't wreck my wheel. I've already spent about 2 hours at it and no way am I going to do it with a pad

How does it kill your wheel? Surely it can't be any worse than playing GT5 for 5 hours on the trot

With force feedback on and the constant corrections you have to make. There are videos online showing gymkhana with a wheel, and the wheel is almost never still. Even when you're turning one way in a donut, you're having to go to opposite lock to stop yourself spinning out entirely.

So, how does this "wreck your wheel"? Sounds analogous to "driving your car wears out your tires faster than not driving your car".

Is the handbrake very necessary for gymkhana? It seems like that would be the hardest part if so.

Its VERY necessary. Once you do the tutorials you'll see :P

I drive DFGT and I made the Up Shift on the Stick the handbrake. Just add that natural vibe :)

Question....what exactly is the objective of Gymkhana mode? Is it some sort of drift only mode? If so, can it be played in an online multiplayer event, to see who gets the most drift points?

You asked that in another thread. Pehaps you should consider waiting for a reply before posting again? With the game's release imminent, this is a high-traffic sub-forum. So there's a fair chance your question will be answered (indeed, it already has been) if you just show a little patience. Otherwise, it's just spam.

Gymkhana with a wheel is great. I couldn't stop playing on it yesterday. You don't have to use the handbrake, you can adjust your brake bias to the rear let the weight of the car put you into a slide/donut. But obviously, it is easier with the handbrake.

Yeah I found it very addictive, but used the driving aid to make it easier.
It may wear off but hopefully new stages will appear with DLC.

Its not as hard as Alan from TeamVVV made out in his preview.
I am cautious though of how hard it is on a wheel so would limit my playtime with it rather than long repeated stints.

Initially, I thought it was pretty hard with all assists off in cockpit view. Of course, I have no experience with drifting really. However, I have managed to at least gold every Gymkhana event so far, after multiple attempts, but I am only in season 2. Of course this is after spending hours practicing sliding sideways through cones. Since platinum is a perfect run and I am against using rewinds I will never see one of those lol. I will eventually crack just for the trophies. I honestly just can't wait for the PS Store to be back up so we can play online. Oh, I have not had any problems with force feedback on Gymkhana events and my feedback settings are all rather high (80-100% all).
