I have been play GT since the day GT1 came out, and I have become quite good at it using my trusted DS3. Well I finally decided that it was time for me to upgrade and get a wheel since everyone says that you run much faster times if you use one. So my Fanatec 911 Carrera wheel shows up in the mail yesterday, and I get all excited. I go out to Walmart, and purchase a $20.00 computer cart to use as a wheel stand, get my wheel set up, Turn on GT5, and all of a sudden I go from being pretty good at this game, to being the worst driver I have ever seen! After playing with the wheel for a few hours (running all of the beginners races with level 4 and lower vehicles), and getting the Force Feedback settings to an acceptable level I am improving, but I'm definitely not ready to start racing online again. My question to you all is how long did it take for you guys to become proficient with the wheel? Because right now I'm pretty bad!

P.S. Any tips you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance ;)

It took me about a week to fully adapt myself and another week or two to really start improving my laptimes. As for the tips..try to find good settings for your Carrera (i use the one that ISR guys are using)

Give it a couple of weeks. It depends how often you play the game and how patient you are but, and I know this sounds cliche, you'll never want to go back to the pad.... for ANY racing game.

It took me a while to adjust at first too, and I was miserable with the wheel. I was also really fast with the DS3, but now I think I'm much faster with the wheel. I use a 6 speed H-gate shifter, clutch and all.

Remember to turn all the assists off, go through the licenses again, and master the basics like finding your driving line, braking, throttling and steering. These things will come naturally to you, it just takes practice.

Only took me about 1 hour to start beating my lap times that were set with a controller. Best thing to do is pick an easy car (low hp/ AWD), and take it to a track you know really well and just start running laps.

I'd say roughly 10-12 hours minimum to begin getting lap times close to what you did on your DS3. And eventually, you'll start breaking all your old lap records.

Wow you guys are quick. Around 50 hrs track time I reckon.
One day you'll be struggling and the next it will just fall into place.

Be warned. When your fully competent with a wheel you will end up crap on the pad.
Me using a controller is a sight to behold. Wall bashing, lock ups and very poor.

Just keep running laps in a practice mode. Don't try to run races right off the bat, don't keep restarting every time you crash... just keep practicing and you'll get good. Pro race drivers practice alot.

Agree^ It took me a while to adapt to the wheel, but instead of getting angry, you're best plan of action is to simply lap lots of different circuits, increasing in difficulty whilst increasing the difficulty of the car. I started on High Speed Ring and ended on the Nordschliefe with a 787B Stealth :)

Let's see, I got my wheel the beginning of this year, kind of didn't play much because the pedals were busted, got an exchange towards the end of last month. I think it took me maybe a week of 2 hours a night to get decent with the wheel. Now I think I'm better (or feel it's a lot easier) and that's after about 2 weeks

30hours ish. I am now faster than a DS3 on all tracks and all cars.

I went from not being able to control a fast MR car like the Minolta with the DS3 to multiple clean laps on the Nurb without issue.

The control - especially for ridiculously powerful cars is unmatched. Stick with it - the first time I thought there was no way that I would be faster with a wheel. Now catching over-steer etc is awesome and SO MUCH FUN. It is so rewarding to counter steer the right amount against a slide catching it at 150+.

I competed the full lap AMG intermediate challenge. I had the SLS going completely sideways at 2 points recovering from a tankslapper. Awesome!

I got it right away with my G25. The first thing I noticed was that I could easily control the cars (GT5P).

Depends on the game. GT3? Really only took a few hours of fiddling to get stuff down. GT4? I never figured it out. Enthusia? Several days of practice. TXRD2? About an hour. NFSU2? Took a few days, though not as much as Enthusia.

In regards to PC games, (SCGT, NFS: PU, rFactor)? It was basically instantaneous.

It took me abut a month to adjust inteel i was rly happy with my Driving Drifting And lap time race Results. Now i wouldnt dream of going back to controler. only upgrading my wheel to Fantec:)

I was having some trouble with my wheel yesterday, so I tried the controller again. Even after a month of the wheel I think I am still faster with the controller...

I think it is going to take me 50 plus hours to get this down. I can't even complete one lap at Nurburgring in the 300 SL! At least I was able to complete FF, FR, and 4WD Seasonal Events. I guess I have a lot of practice time ahead of me. I think I'm going to have to start the game from scratch on a different account, and hopefully by the time I get to the Expert Events I will have this figured out.

it took me about less than a week to really adapt to it. i redid all licenses as practice. the trick is to take your time and not rush things like others said. but yeah, practice makes perfect :)

I'm in the same boat, I just picked up my first wheel today, been using the controller since GT1. I SUCK BALLS at it right now, but I'm confident that I'll get the hang of it and get some good lap times down. I have some practice times on Laguna (my favorite track), so once I feel confident, I'm going to go back and see how I do compared to the controller times with the same car/tune.
