Well, the first racing games I got used to were the Need 4 Speed series, which is unrealistic in that the tracks have no hairpins. And dont require almost any braking.
The only other racing game I ever tried to race on was GT3. So it took me about 3-4 hours, but now I am probably the best that anyone I know, knows of.
Long before GT3 I have been a car FANATIC, no one I know, understands my obsession
I know the horspower and just about every stat for about 90% of the cars made within the last 30-40 years, trust me, my thirst for knowledge is insatiable and I honestly know pretty much every kind of information there is to know other than any actual hands on experience
I couldn't race a real car for the life of it, I couldn't do any major repair to a car at all. I just know the parts and how they work and how to make them better etc.
Basically I am just full of book knowledge, but I have no idea, (other than what someone might have told me) what the cockpit of a 1988 Ferrari Testarossa sounds like at 166mph, or how much throttle to give a 1993 Porsche 911 Turbo on Laguna Seca's Corkscrew to keep the back end from stepping out.
I do plan on taking countless driving schools and race schools once I am done university.
And I will definitely own and enter several cars in local races and events. I even plan on getting really into it, once I get my act together and get some real money.
