I know that downloading speed varies greatly depending on internet connection, but I'd be much obliged if anyony can give me a rough idea of how long it takes.

My friend has an original copy of GT5, but they haven't used it because of the supposed long update time. I've downloaded all of the updates as they've come out so I don't really know how long it may take. Would it be an extremely long download time? How much faster would it be to start out with the XL/Spec II edition?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

He won't play the game because he's afraid of update download times? How will he react when he experiences the terribly slow menu screens... :nervous:

Seriously, it will take a few hours, but so what? Just leave the console updating at night, and if you feel like it you can abort the downloads of each update any time, so it will only keep the installed updates but lets you play the game at its current version or turn the system off.

I thought XL/Spec edition includes all the patch download which is worth 3 hours and I believe it contains a few dollars worth of DLC packs.

Yeah. But he doesn't have XL. He has the original version still. So updates would be necessary.

Technically not necessary, he could decline the updates and play on v1.00. I wouldn't advise it, v1.00 is a mere shell of a game but it's possible.

👍

Just start the game without an internet connection and it shouldn't ask you to update!

The game really does suck though, at that version, you'll be missing A LOT.

I'm trying to get some friends together to play online so we would all need the latest version.

What I'm hoping for is just a ballpark estimate. Are we talkin' 2-3 hours, 8-10 hours, 20-24 hours? How much faster would it be with the XL version?

It depends on your download speed - average with a good connection is about 3-4 hours, for some it can be 1-2 hours and others 6+ hours. If your connection is of a high standard, i.e. above 10mbps then it shouldn't be too bad.

The XL version has fewer updates to download so would be less than an hour.

My ps3 is connected via wireless connection and my current internet speed is 7.5mbps and it will probably take me 3 hours. If I have my ps3 hooked to my router then I reckon it will take me half an hour because my internet connection becomes stronger (14.5mbps)

You're saying that under the assumption the PS servers will allow you to download at your maximum speed. That's very rarely the case, I have 60Mbps and very rarely do I see speeds near that on PSN.

What is the full size of all the updates now anyway?

Start downloading the updates on a night before school or work, so if it hasn't downloaded and installed through the night, it has the time you're away to finish up. I'll go with the presumption you have at least 10mbs so it should be done through the night.

I have a V1.00 disc, last time I re-installed it took something like 3 hours. That was on the 15mbit connection I had at my old house. Now there is at least 500mb of newer updates and I only have 6mbit.

I think if I had to re-install I might actually consider buying a newer copy of GT5.

I don't mean to complain about the updates, but I really don't want to wait 5+ hours to install the game if I had to do it again.

My thanks to everyone for the information.

GT 5 has 24 updates with 4,663 MB's of data.

GT 5 Spec II / XL Edition has V2.00 on the disc which leaves 11 updates and 1,593 MB's of data.

GT 5 Academy Edition has V2.07 leaving just 4 updates and 429 MB's of data.

He would be unable to use the "Academy edition" updates with his current disk because the PS3 reads them as different files.
