How long until?

When will the Socket As be fully replaced by the 939s? What I heard is that AMD wants people to move away from the Athlons and toward the Semprons and the 64bit processors. Is this true? If it is, how long will it take before AMD stops manufacturing the Athlons? (And in particular, the 2500+xp barton core)

I'm asking because I want to build my computer around that chip in December, and I already have all the parts planned out. It'd be a bummer I find out that the chip doesn't exist anymore!

So, help? thanks!

Have you seen the prices on any 939 chip?

939 wont be replacing A for a while, and I'm not thinking 754 will be long run either. An A will last you a while. You can see AMD has plans to keep this as atleast their value line with the release of Semprons.

I like'em As, hope they keep'em for a while. 👍

I do, however, have a recommendation. Instead of getting a Desktop barton 2500+, get a mobile athlon, like the 35-watt 2400+. If you're confortable with overclocking, that is. The mobile chips are not only unlocked, but run at that speed with much less voltage stock, obviously leading to much better overclocking performance.

Alright.. I've heard good things about the mobile.. But should I buy an aftermarket HSF? The ones that come with the mobile are tiny are they not? (Assuming if I buy a retail 2500+mobile)

Mobiles don't come in retail, only OEM. Obviously, since these were made for laptops, the amount of room around the CPU will vary, they just send it like that, I assume.

So, yes, you'll have to buy an aftermarket.

:odd: Werd. The place I was looking at said 'retail'. :odd: Oh well. Thanks!
Hmm.

Even if they did sell a retail version, the heatsink included would deffinitely not be suited for the kind of overclocking the mobiles are known for. Aftermarket deffinitely! :)

You might want to wait for the Winchester Athlon 64 chips. They are 939 sockets and 512k cache. The 3000+ is going for around $180, although supplies are extremely non-existent right now
