hey, its been a while! upon returning i noticed that there over 83,166 members! damn this place is popular! so i decided to browse the members directory to find out who were the top posters, and boy are there some big hitters with some members achieiving inexcess of 16,000+ posts! not bad i thought. then i looked at the other end of the scale at those that had posted the least, and i was shocked by what i found.

why are there so many people that have never posted at all? by 'so many' i mean 63,674 people that have never posted at all. why is that figure so high? if you include members that have posted less than 10 times, the figure jumps up to 76,459! now subtract that from the actual count shown at the top of the forums page, which is 83,146 (at the time of this posts creation) and your left with only 6,707 active members. even if you subtracted the members that heve never posted, you would only have 19,742 active members. thats one hell of a difference.

further investigation reveals some disturbing truths. GTPs actual membership has been fudged, ie. made up! i tell no lies! if you dont believe me check these page ranges yourself (sorted by join date): 3080 to 4131. do you see a pattern yet?

if you look at all the members that have joined from 03 april 2005, when gt4 stats were first included in our profiles (page 3484 sorted by join date) up until today, you will notice that out of those that have not made a single post, every single one has got the same gt4 completion percentage: '11.22.' isnt that a tad suspicious? infact the latest member craig_c who has only just joined today has the same gt4 completion percentage of '11.22.'! check his profile here:
craig_c

by my rough calculations, there should actually be no more than 7 or 8,000 actual members - a tenth of the reported figure. why is GTPs membership being artificially inflated like this?

im probably gonna be hit with a big fat ban after this post, but the truth will out.

1. You have to register to search the forums, download attachments, plus you get no scrollover ads (the red words), no annoying ad box at the top-right hand of the post, and you get no pop-ups. Heck, the reason I joined was that I needed to use the search function. Nothing more, nothing less. Now I'm a GTP addict. :scared:

2. The 11.22 percentage is a bug in the system.

3. And you have to violate the AUP and TOS a crapload of times to get banned. Asking a simple question and pointing out a bug in the system doesn't deserve a ban, IMO.

ok then, assuming the 11.22. gt4 completion percentage is a bug in the system, how do you account for the 63,674 people who have never made a post. is that a bug too?

I noticed that too. Post your message, then edit it. On the edit screen, there's a checkbox that says "Put signature in post" or something like that. Check that box, and then you're sigs there.

Thank you very much.

Seems like I have to do that to every post I make.

People do that all the time. If you go to any forum, I guarantee you that 99% of the time the majority of the registered members will have 0 posts.

I don’t mean to pick on Giles, but let’s take a look at his Member list: 89 users with at least one post, 303 with 0 posts.

I’d pull up some more data, but I have to go eat dinner.

hmmm.... ok, im kinda seeing it... but 63,000! thats a lot of people, 3/4 of this forums membership infact!

...maybe i should go premium and rename myself 'the conspiracy theorist'?

July 29 2003 is when i joined

i made two posts around that time concerning GT3

then i started posting it up around january of 2005...

so from july 2003 to january 2005 i made only two posts :)

now i have 982 posts

Some quick facts.

People who have made over 100 posts: 1779
People who have made over 250 posts: 965
People who have made over 500 posts: 587
People who have made over 1000 posts: 331

To add to the GTP funkyness whilst updating:
1. Top right corner always displays a "login menu" even when I'm already logged in.

Cool facts, so I'm in the TOP 333... :) ...
However, imo it's better to have a few hundred posters, since you get to know some of them... I mean, depending on which subforums you go to on a regular basis, you always meet the same 50 people or so and I like it that way.
I think that most people only came because of a specific GT game and never got out of for example the GT4 forum. As soon as they have finished GT4 they lost interest in gtp and left. Gtp really covers all subjects from videogames over cars and other hobbies to politics and philosphy ;). You have to discover it first though. In the beginning I never came out of the GT4 forum and I almost lost interest in gtp. Luckily I did a little tour and stayed :)

I totallly agree with Max, most members just stay in one section of the forums and if they loose interest they'll leave GTPlanet. I'm not active in every forum of GTP either, but I would never leave cause I know that if I'm bored I go to the rumble strip to see if there's some offtopic stuff going around:)

And it always works, rumble strip and convo forums together are damn active!!👍 Never get bored here:D There's still some sections I never saw.....💡 I might go check out everything someday!

That’s just it. Many people only post in a few forums and alot of those forums within GTP turn into mini communities. I like that. :)

Why would you be banned? It takes a consistent pattern of being an idiot, and this is just one post.

GTP jumped in membership from about 25,000 members to about 70,000 members during the year (and particularly the last few months) leading up to the relesase of GT4. This is because Jordan made membership a requirement if you wanted to download videos and screenshots. Interest in these items was very high as the world anticipated the release. Those people had no interest in posting; they just wanted the pictures and movies.

There was a steeper but shorter spike in membership after the release of GT4, as people got their hands on the game. But many of those new members have posted.

That being the case an increase of 45,000 is unbelievable. :dopey:
I shudder to think what the increase will be like in the months leading to Vision Gran Turismo, which for all intense purposes should be an improvment on GT4 as it will be a PS3 title. :sly:

The numbers aren't fudged at all, they're simply a number of members who have registered with this site. It never says "active members" anywhere.

I was somewhere in these two categories. I wanted the videos and pictures and definitely wanted some after buying the game so I signed up. I didn't intend to post but after a little while I noticed peopel asking questions I had answers to. I would answer them and then move on.

Then around May I discovered the off topic section. I just read for a bit and then decided to wander into the opinions forum. That did it. I am too opionated and argumentative to stay quiet. Now look at me; I am a premium member (everyone should be) and this will be my 926th post.

Most people are not as argumentative or willing to help as I am. This is the first online community I have ever gotten involved with. I am registered on the ABC Lost boards but rarely say anything there because they aren't properly moderated and filled with idiots. Is my count as a registered member fake? No, I just don't like their boards, but it is a resource for spoilers and ideas.

Many of the non-posting members probably pop on, get some game info, watch the mission hall or license test videos, and then go on their way without saying a word. They don't like talking to strangers because their parents told them not to.

It's because your existence certificate has been denied. You must fill out a new form.

I'm one of those members except I don't post in the GT4 forums much anymore. I mainly post everywhere but there and that Computer forums.

I've only been here about 10 months, and I was one of the ones that signed on just before or at the time of the GT4 release.

From memory, it wasn't because I wanted videos/pictures or anything like that, I think I wanted to vote in one of the photo comps and to voice an opinion I had on GT4.

I started out in the GT4 forum, and didn't stray far from there. I knew about the other stuff, but thought this was a predominantly GT board so outside of the GT4 forum there would be little interest.

Boy, was I wrong.

I can't remember what it was that bought me out here, but now I spend more time in The Rumble Strip and the likes than I do in the GT4 forum, and only go back there to see if there are any questions I can help answer.

I currently spend most of my time browsing through The Rumble Strip, and don't want to venture too far away as I think I already spend too much time reading everything on here - monitoring another 3 or 4 forums could be the end of my social life... :nervous:

If it wasn't for these other forums then I would probably have left long ago, as the GT4 forum has stagnated and there's no need to go there all the time. It would be interesting to compare the number of posts I've made in the GT4 forum to outside of that - I think the number might be 1:2 or higher.

IMO it's the select bunch of 'Active' members that you come across all the time that makes this place great. The ability to have conversations with the same people on a regular basis, and getting to 'know' them adds to the experience. You expect witty remarks from some, and overpowering knowledge from others.

The GTP Community rocks!
