Ok, so most of us know that GT5 claims to have 1000 cars, roughly 200 premium and the remainder standard cars.

However, as you might've noticed, there are various overlaps in both premium and standard cars, an obvious premium example is the two variations on the MX-5 mk 1, or the various GT-R versions, a few others, but worse than that is the standard cars, I mean, there are heaps of cross overs here, and I've been on a mission to collect all 1000 cars just to see how many once I'm finished, are actually unique.

Has anyone achieved this, and then looked through to find the actual number of cars in the game (unique cars I should say)? I have a feeling it'll be just under 200 premium (180 say) and about 650 unique standard - it could be even worse than that, but it'll be interesting to see if anyone's done it.

Only problem in the analysis is its quite detailed, the Peugeot 106 S16 and Rallye are two variants of the same car, but in my book it would've been better to just do one of them and do it better, than have one slightly light and one slightly more powerful version.

I'm not sure if I've asked this, or if someone else has answered this, but I'm still interested to know.

The bolded part is the issue. It all depends on how you define a unique car. In the example, while it may(or may not) have been better to include only one, I'd still consider those to be two different cars in the same family, just as I would say a '69 SS Camaro is not the same as a '69 Z/28 Camaro et cetera.

There are a few Standard/Premium overlaps, and there are some duplicate MX-5s(and possibly others) due to a combination of the car being sold under different names and the different region versions of GT games being combined together into GT5's car list. There are also some cars that are correctly named, but are in fact nearly identical cars sold under those multiple names, like the Vauxhalls and Opels. I think most of the famously numerous Skylines are at least somewhat unique models in some way, they just have often very similar performance.

There's also the issue with a '96 FD RX-7 vs a '97 FD RX-7 of the same trim level and whether you consider those unique cars. This is obviously an issue with the Skylines as well. Those are popular cars in the game's home market and despite some people wanting to dismiss that, it is not irrelevant. I understand why people would want to lump them together, but as the owner of a '96 Z-28 Camaro with T-tops, if there was that exact car in GT5 I would love it, and consider it a quite separate model from the '97 hardtop or a '96 v6 Camaro or even a '96 hardtop Z-28. The '97 is close enough for me as it is, but I can understand why someone who loves their particular(or favorite) Skyline would love having it in the game, and better than having something 'close enough,' even if the performance is near identical.

So the short answer is that it's a tough question to really answer. Someone may have a technical answer for "how many cars that are in fact distinct separately sold/created models are in GT5," but I haven't seen it(or attempted to search for it). A lot of people have their own answers to "how many cars that I am willing to consider unique are in GT5." Some people don't even think the Standards are worthy of counting at all. I'm going to just stick with "a lot," or possibly "more than I can ever hope to fully enjoy."

Ok well, I think it's time many years later, that this answer is stated on the internet once and for all. 9.5 years later I will attempt to answer my younger self, with help from Kudos Prime.

1111 cars initially let's see how many are duplicated.

The rules? I will completely make them up, and I will list all of the cars I deem have been duplicated.

C'mon, this is important research that needs to be completed!
12 year old game or not we need to know

This list is wrong, the mini cooper 02 is not a dupe of the mini cooper 11.
*This list has an error.

Thanks for letting me know, I'll revise that along with any other issues once I get around to finishing it.
