I've got Gran Turismo 5 like 2 weeks ago, and I'm playing it a lot, but sometimes it concerns me that I'm running it for too long, I don't know if its about the hype that GT5 was using all of the PS3 processing power or else, but usually I play 4-8 hours and then leave it some time cooling, half an hour to 2 hours .And here's the problem, for how much time is it safe to keep it on? I've heard that alternating between on and off might wear some components and that it is actually better to leave it running rather than switch it off. When I put my hand on it, it doesn't seem hot, only in the rear right part. Should I worry? Or it's all crap? I wanted to ask this before but now that I'm a bit ahead in the game and there are some endurance races. I saw a post ine theforum where someone said he/she was running it since the last 24th.

Sorry for asking a lot of questions, but I just want to keep my Playstation away from any risks! It's a 120GB Slim model.

I had my PS3 since early 07 and kept it on for a week and probably 2+ days at a time over 60 times and it's running fine. I'm always too lazy to just shut it off sometimes and when I leave for a long period of time lol. Never cleaned it either or dusted or anything so I don't know why everyone is worried about it being wrecked, it's an 80gb by the way.

I hosted a free run session for 10 hours the other day at Nordschleife, and I didn't notice any problems. If you keep your PS3 ventilated, I don't see the problem.

I've had my PS3 since launch, and apart from a wierd GPU problem, it is running sweet as a nut! 👍

Ive kept mine on everyday since gt5 came out, no problems. Ive had it turned off twice since the release to move it. I got a gen 1 ps3 too. Its either going to **** or its not. One thing they talk about in the sony manaul is to keep it on the side that you start with for the life of the machine. Like dont play it flat then play it standing up all the time. Not sure why.

I normally keep mine on 24/7. It's a 250 GB slim model. I turned it off this week because I am not in Alaska currently.

For the record I have had my PS3 for three years or so and it has been turned on for the whole time apart from the odd day here and there.

It is well ventilated and I make sure that dust is regularly cleaned from the vents underneath but other than that it's left turned on 24/7 365.

Mine is on every day 24/7 for b spec and COD. If your worried about your ps3 being coocked i suggest doing what i did to mine. I went out bought a cheap laptop fan (17inch works best) then stick the usb in the ps3. then the ps3 is cool and hardly makes any noise. I've left mine on since the release of GT5 in the UK.

I usually only run a few hours, been scared to go further. Both my PS3s broke at some point, but got them fixed with some thermal paste. Reading up on what others are doing, I'm going to let it run longer now.

I've been running my for 4 days striaght officially at 10 am this morning (mountain). So currently I'm at, 100 hours and 25 minutes.

Edit: runnin a Slim 120gb bought in early 10'

Think of the planet people :)

have a friend that studies astro-something and the universe. He told me pollute waste energy and what ever because the out look isn't exactly great. Of course he said that jokingly about the waste energy and polluting.

I don't think I've ever left my ps3 on for longer than 12hours.
But now....it's been on for almost 3 days straight. Haven't raced myself during that stretch either, just b-spec.
Just till my bob gets to 30, after that I'll give it a 2 or 3 day rest, and then I'll start doing the Vettel challenges.
He's halfway at 28 now, just a couple more races.
It's one of those first 40gb ones aswell, but it's going strong.

The PS3 itself should be fine running for days on end, but all hard drives have a lifespan and the more it's accessed the faster it's end will come. Leaving it on for 2-3 days on rare occasions wouldn't do any noticeable damage, but if it's a permanent thing then it'll make a difference.

My ps3 is pretty new (like 3 months). It has been switched on since GT5 has been installed 1 week after release. It ran GT5 all that time except for installing patches. Daytime/at home/and I have time to spare I play, other than that B-Spec races.

Don't put it into a cupboard or something but keep it in clean air and it'll be fine.

10 Days so far and due to the stupid XP levelling thing the B-spec Bobs are running around Endurance Races 24/7

Hell one day they may even let me Have a go at driving some Cars

I havent turned my PS3 off in over 2 years. When not playing games/watching Blu-ray's I leave it running Folding@Home. 60Gig launch model (with a 160 Gig upgrade).

I started really trying to level up my B-spec sometime yesterday. Mine's definitely been on for more than 24 hours at the moment. Not stopping any time soon either. :)

Mine has been on for over a week at least and it is no warmer than it was 30 minutes after I started it.

Leaving them on should not harm them unless there is already something about to fail.

As for hard drives I have had hard drives that were ran 24/7 for up to 5 years with no issues at all.
Power surge and/or drop is the worst enemy of these devices. I have lost a few hard drives due to power outages in the past. Now that all my equipment is on a UPS I have not lost a sinlge one in several years now and most of my systems run round the clock.
