Since most of my pictures are 60-700kb, how many pictures can my 80gb hdd hold? Since its formatted it is now 74gb but I was thinking like 74,000 right? Of course i dont have that many pictures but just wanted to know. Thanks

More like over 100,000 if they were all 700kb. But, you have to factor in the size of other programs and the OS, so it depends greatly.

74Gb = 74,000,000,000 bytes

/ 700,000 bytes per picture ~ 100,000 at 700Kb per pic.

But that's not including any more software you install, any MP3s you download or rip from CDs, your internet cache, virtual memory, your pornography collection etc.

Why do you want to know anyway? Who fills up a hard drive with nothing but photos?

Isn't one gigabyte = 1024 megabyte?

So 74GB = 75776MB. And 75776MB = 77594624KB.

77594624 / (1300 / 2) = 119376 point three four five pictures.

Umm im sorry, but yeah I said 60-700KB, some are around 60KB, others are around 700KB, and of course others are inbetween. Hope this clears stuff up :) , thanks for all that feedback, I was just curious since im getting a digital camera next week and am sure im gonna have a lot of pics. And plus my 7GB mp3 file will be used on that hdd.

And to clear things up, which you may have skipped is, I have a 74gb raptor for my games, os, software hard drive. Any my 80gb is for media.

This is correct.

From another source -

  • 1024 Bytes = 1 Kilobyte
  • 1024 Kilobytes = 1 Megabyte
  • 1024 Megabytes = 1 Gigabyte
  • 1024 Gigabytes = 1 Terabyte
  • 1024 Terabytes = 1 Petabyte
  • 1024 Petabytes = 1 Exabyte - In 2000, 3 exabytes of information was created
  • 1024 Exabytes = 1 Zettabyte
  • 1024 Zettabyte = 1 Zottabyte
  • 1024 Zottabyte = 1 Brontobyte - that is a 1 followed by 27 zeroes

Well, technically 1024 bytes = 1 Kibibyte. And 1024 Kibibytes = 1 Mebibyte, and so on. Kilo = 1000 (10 to the power of 3). Binary data is measured in 2 to the power of 10, which equals 1024. Hence the confusion.
