As part of Jeremy Clarkson's chat show, he did a "stupid science" segment. During the course of this he:

Microwaved a potato with copper electrodes inserted in it.
Microwaved a light bulb.
Barbequed a water melon (do NOT try this at home)
Attempted to siphon a litre of petrol. With an electric vacuum cleaner...

Actually, back in the day, my father used to own several of those self-service car washes with the big vacuum stations out back. One Sunday afternoon we came to do our regular service rounds. The place was deserted, and one of the vacuum cleaner enclosures (which were made out of 3/16" steel, welded together) looked like someone had tossed a grenade into it - utterly destroyed.

We found out later from a regular customer that on Saturday a guy had towed in an outboard-motorboat on a trailer. Apparently he had gotten water in the gas tank and he was trying to suck it off the bottom of the tank without losing the gasoline floating on top...

We never did find out what happened to the idiot or his boat, but it probably had shrapnel holes in it.

Fumes built up in the enclosure - probably 8-10 cubic feet of concentrated vapors, which is a lot. They are heavier than air so it took a few minutes for them to build up high enough to hit the commutator spark in the electric motor on top of the vacuum machine.
