It's based on the fact that you will be choosing quickly. and remembering only one card. But it's pretty cool for the first half-hour or so it took me to figure it out.

there's a mild curve in the second version, a rise. it accounts for whatever.

Talentless is basically right - the top line in the bottom version is not straight. If you plot iit out on graph paper you'll see the top line rises up to the middle (where the pieces meet), and then slops back down to the end point.

The extra space equals the total extra area of the 'bulged' top line over the straight line.
