How To Access Time Trials In Arcade Mode?

Hi, i have the japanese gt5 prologue and im a bit confused as to how to set up time trials in the arcade mode...sometimes i get races sometimes i get time trials but im not sure how to select either?

The checkered flag icon is single race, the little stop watch clock thing next to it is time trial.
