So I'm off to uni, now chances are my laptop will probably spend most its time in halls, but as and when the time comes to transport one of my most expensive possesions, would it be worth investing in a laptop skin/bag?

I'd prefer a skin (as in zip up holder, not a fancy cover), as I intend to attend the gym fairly regularly so being able to fit it in amongst other stuff would be helpful, but most skins are pretty pathetic being nothing more than neoprene "anti-scratch" skins. Anyone got anything better?

Reasonable budget. £15-20 tops.

I know that here you can find a padded sleeve thing. They probably run pretty cheap and work well.

Don’t carry it in a laptop bag or one of those obviously designed laptop-carrying-backpacks unless you really want it to be stolen.

Good point, Sage.

The Skins/sleaves are dissapointing as all the ones I have seen seem to have no re-inforcement on the corners, merely wet-suit neoprene that I've had on my pencil case the last 4 years.

I think they should just market a steel suitcase with strong locking mechanisms for laptops. You might even throw a GPS unit into the laptop while you are at it.

InCase makes a good padded sleeve you can use. When I'm traveling, I have a laptop bag that looks like a regular backpack. Lots of room for the notebook, textbooks, and accessories. There's a very thickly padded space for the laptop. I use that + the InCase sleeve. Between the two, I can travel without worrying about the notebook. Then again, I'm aggressive with my backpacks and I have been known to just toss them around with laptops inside. This is sufficient. If you're REALLY paranoid, grab a Pelican case for it. They're cheaper and more durable than Zero Haliburton cases.

Oh, and NEVER let the laptop out of your sight. EVER.

Also, put something bright or unique on your bag. In case it gets lost, this will be an identifier. My briefcase has a keychain with boiled leather headphones attached.
