So bizarrely out of nowhere I got this message on my D400.

It is not permanant, it only does it after a few shots (every 10-20 shots). And when looking through the "eye patch", when it hangs itself up on this error, it darkens through the eye hole, as if the shutter would not go all the way

I tried a different card, batterie and lens. Still did it.

Cleaned the contacts even though they were not oxydized or anything.

Still did it.

Then I took the lens off and shot a few shots to see if it's the shutter that hangs itself up. The naturally it didn't hang up.

Now I did shot some 100 shots and it didn't hang itself up.

I have no idea what it could be. Searched the internet, did everything mentioned as above.

I will do some more shots to see if it still does it...

EDIT: It still does it but after the cleaning now less (every 50-80 shots)

Any ideas here?

FYI : It has mainly a Sigma lens mounted and I think as that messes up the autofocus often, it could be a lens problem?

So after a lot of other trials:

Different batteries
Different cards
No card
Different lenses
Contacts cleaned
body cleaned
reset (both batt. out for 30 min.)

it still does it.

The only case I can not reproduce is without an lens.
But as it only does it after a lot of shots, I will try to do it also without lens.

So I start to thing it's the shutter itself.

Does anybody know how I can see the shuttercount?

The camera is not in warrenty anymore and has probably taken between 25000 - 35000 shots.
A new shutter seems to come at 250€ as what the mighty internet says.

Bugger

Nobody has ideas??

I wanted to grab a 5dmk3 end of the year, but can't "afford" it budgetary wise before the holidays, double bugger.

I now just hope the shutter doesn't completely quit in summer.

I assume by "objective" that you're talking about the lens? If so, do you have any friends that have lenses you could try out?

^Yup, corrected above now.
Tried out 3 different lenses (1 sigma, 1 canon ef + 1 efs).
Same

If I would be sure it's the shutter itself a 1100D or 550D are only a few quid more than the repair of this one and have more options

EDIT: Ok, no idea how. but now it's worse. Redid the process above again. Now it does it 99% of the time :(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

Gonna phone Canon tomorrow, if it's seriously 250€, I will buy a new one, for 280€ I get the 1100D and for 430€ the 550D.

Ok need buying advice:

1100D = 286€
550D = 473€
600D = 469€

Body only.

THe 5DmkIII will be postponed a few months than from end 2012 to mid 2013.

Canon is the phoning HELL : half an hour on the phone , still not got a price, waiting for an email from them but I am not sure they got my email right :S

Also would it be worth the cost to let the 400D repair at a repair shop (should be less expensive than the Canon one and gift it or sell it later on?)

Second hand 5D Mk 1 should be seriously considered, go on your national photography forums and see what can be found. It'll out perform the entry level DSLRs of today and you'll be better prepared for the 5D3. They are also built to last far longer and will most likely of been well looked after throughout the life of it.

^I considered this when I saw your purchase of it a year ago. But in Luxemburg, I haven't found one (neither in clubs or refurbished in shops), and buying one of the internet, they still go for very high prices (600-900€) and the risk for me is too high.

Was at 2 photography shops now, nobody was able to give me an estimate on the shutter. Then I asked how much an analogue film developpement would cost, I fell out of the sky. 20€ for 1 film à 32 pics.

Seriously and then they complain that they are a dying breed.

Now I got an email back from a camera repair center, Canon certif., 130€ to change it, if it's only the shutter.

EDIT: Okay, made my oopsy: bought the 600D, will get the 400D repaired and gift it for xmas to my mom.

^Thanks.

The higher ISO is really welcome (d400 has 1600 max and is grainy as sand)
And the video will ensure me some extended hours in editing ;)

Lenses in this range are usually labeled as multi-purpose lenses. They will probably have a focal length between 28mm to 200mm , with their largest f-stop being f/2.8 to f/5.6. You may find some Tele Converter lenses in this category as well, but predominately it will be fixed lenses at 50mm and standard zoom lenses.

^We were talking exclusively about bodies. Sorry.

Also got the cam today. shot some pics during lunch. Nice piece of hardware 👍 Testing the crap out of it tonight.

Congrats on the new camera, ibo. 👍

Testing the crap out of it tonight.
And posting something "happy" in the appropriate thread, right? ;)

My last shot before the 400D broke down qualifies,....

I post it tomorrow, reformated my work-server PC, now reinstalling the programs...

Ohhh the misery :

Cr2 files didn't open at all (preview in explorer). Those from the 400D worked as I had installed FastPicture before it became payable.

Then I tried the MS codecs. Again the 600D didn't work.

After hours of searching installing and deinstalling on a freshly reformatted PC, I tried nearly everything.

Is there a free solution for it?
I understand that Ardfry or Fastpicture codecs should work (both cost around 15€), but isn't there a free solution to the problem??

I haven't come across anything. I run Windows atm too and the only way I get around it is setting the camera to RAW and a Basic jpg. Sure it takes up more space on the card but it actually isn't that much. Then I just file through the jpgs until I see one I like and then upen up the RAW. 👍

When you bought you cameras, there should have been a disc included. On said disc is a program for viewing/editing RAW files. I can't remember what the full name is as I just call it DPP.

Short of that, and possibly a Photoshop extension, I don't know of any way to preview CR2 files.

TB : I can viwe them and open them, no problem, enough programs for that. It's to see the preview of them in a windows folder. Canon has a codec but doesn't work on x64 systems. I got it installed but it does not work. Ms codec is really good, but doesn't support the 600d, 60d,...

Boffin: good tip, didn't thought about that, only thought about it software sided. 👍

For the moment I got it to work. Installed the trial version of Ardfry codec, now i can look at my raws in the windows folder 👍 15 day left :(

15€ for 2-3 .dll is a bit steep.
