Now i love movies. I have a ton of them in my hard drive.

I'm just wondering how i can transfer them from my PC to my PS3 Slim...?

I remember a few months back, when i still had my old fat PS3, i tried 'PS3 Video 9'. I had little success and it was very slow. 👎

Are there any other converters out there that's more efficient and actually works? What kind of video files does the latest firmware allow you to play in the PS3?

:dopey:

Last updated a few months ago... but it's still all MP4s and AVIs.

You'll need to convert any MKVs into AVI format before you can play them. Sucks to have Blu-Ray or hi-def quality vid-files and to have to downgrade them to play on your Blu-Ray player, but them's the breaks.

I use TVC... but haven't been doing that lately... I usually just watch on my computer. It's too much work to take an hour converting a movie you're only going to watch once.

Use this (http://www.mkv2vob.com/)

It "unpacks" MKV's to whatever video file the movie is in so doesn't actually transcode it therefore it's very quick to convert. Make sure you tick "always transcode DTS" in the configuration tab as the sound won't work unless you have a spiffy AV Amp.

Once you have the video file add it to your Windows Media Player so the PS3 can see it on your PC through the media server or put it on a USB drive and plug it into your PS3 although this only works up to about 4gb.

I haven't found any video file the PS3 won't play recently :)

I second mkv2vob, and am fortunate to have a 'spiffy AV Amp', so don't tick the box.
I throw all my HD movies onto an external network drive that also has a USB connection directly to the PS3. I tried streaming over the network once or twice but found the wireless was never really fast enough.

I've got a Pioneer all in one surround sound AV Amp which is about 5 years old so it's very spiffy at all  It is meant to decode DTS and Dolby Digital but I just get a loud roar without transcoding DTS but it's still 5.1 so won't complain until I can afford/persuade my wife to get an Onkyo ;)

I agree the wireless isn't fast enough for streaming huge video files but I stuck a 250gb HDD in my PS3 so copy all my media onto it until I've watched it.

Thank **** I don't have to wait for Nero to take 2 hours to make a rubbish job of converting to DVD anymore :)

Not that i'm an expert, but if your pioneer has optical in, you may still be able to get the sound working without transcode. I found that when i let my mate borrow my external hard drive, he had same problem with his Panasonic all-in-one. We changed some of the output settings on the PS3 system settings, made sure the PS3 was at the 'normal' volume level and it worked.

I does use an optical lead rather than coaxial, any ideas what settings you made on the PS3 to get it work? I did check it's at normal volume but it wasn't that. Not sure if it's relevant but the MKV sound is fine on the PC using VLC player but not once it's been unpacked by mkv2vob with any media player.

I've been using Dr. Divx to convert my .vob files and they work great.

I third mkvtovob, it is the best hands down, Its really quick and has no loss in quality.

As for what the PS3 plays its really patchy, only some avi's work. The best way though is to get everything into mkv and covert it using the program mentioned.

Robin.

Hmm. I find all my avis work perfectly. In fact, that's the format I encode my own stuff into (things recorded off the TV, for example), using VirtualDub.

Normal volume is essential on the PS3 as the signal is digital noise, turning up the volume seems to modify the signal.
As for the settings on the PS3, i think you need to play with which bitrates/frequencies are set to output. I honestly can't remember which ones i turned off, if i'm up at mates house this weekend i'll check it out.

I generally find the same, but there definately is some issues with some weird sound codecs. Must look into VirtualDub, i'm a fan of handbrake on the Mac for normal AVI conversion.

Not sure if anyone is interested but i've found the PS3 is also great for playing 5.1 DTS Music CD's.
Once i figured out how to convert the DTS discs to 5.1 .WAV's on my hard disk, i fed the signal into my Onkyo amp and have never looked back.
Add this to my HD movies, a whole pile of lossless music and i filled up that external storage very very fast.

I don't recall the sound Codec I use but it's nothing outlandish.

I generally record things off the Sky+ box onto DVD then [step removed] then use DVDx to convert the entire thing to avi (DivX and... MPEG2 I think) and VirtualDub to hack out the adverts and dodgy timing, set to direct stream copy for audi and video. I can get an episode of FlashForward in acceptable SD quality at about 285Mb.

I use PS3 Media Server and it works really well. Does all the encoding and stuff for you too.

I second this option. The Mac version is brilliant, can't comment on the Windows version but I presume it's just as good. Perfect uninterrupted streaming between PC and PS3.

PS3 media server or bust. I havent had to much of a problem streaming 1080p MKV's or copying them over to the HDD. I have used mkv2vob and I do like it. I just dont want to sit at my computer and mess with stuff, id rather just run a single program and have all of the work done for me. Take note though, once you start to transfer over movies with that program, your PS3's HDD will fill up quicker than you think. My 160 is almost full, thinking about going to a 500.
