In my left hand, the ring finger is killing me. I can bend it and all, but it hurts when I ride my bike and grip the bars. I think it's sprained and I keep it wrapped up with icy hot and wrapped with medical tape to keep it tight and straight. Kind of worked but kind of didn't.. Any other way I can help this? Thanks,

-Matt.

If it's sprained more distally (toward the fingertip) you need to find one of the halp-finger slip on splints, and tape that puppy on. AND consider "buddy" taping your ring finger to your middle finger.

If it is sprained more proximally (closer to the palm), you'll need the long finger splint
and do the same as above.

Also, alternate heat and cold.
Heat to bring blood to the area, and cold to reduce swelling.
You'll want no more than 20 minutes of heat or cold at a time.

Psh, what are you, a nurse or something?

I don’t know how to treat a sprained finger, but I know how to treat a broken finger – so snap that puppy and send me a PM.

A man wouldn't treat it. A sprained finger?! Go knead some dough.

Did you jam it or sprained it?

(is that even the proper way to say it? "Sprained it")

Gil has it right, you may need to wrap it up and keep it in place for a while. You don't want to do any extra damage...

Well, the pain is basically on the top of my ring finger, and right near the top of my palm. That's where it's directed at. I'm going to put icy hot on it today and wrap it up since I'm not doing any thing today really.

Damn! was the the weird vocab, or my profile that gave me away?

But You'll not catch me in one of those damn white dresses, nor in that stupid hat!

I'm a bit late into this thread but would like to offer some advice if I may?

As far as I know, Gil is a medical professional so I am not about to stomp all over his advice...but I wouldn't recommend splinting a painful finger. Anything other than a fracture should be encouraged to move. By all means 'buddy strap' (for support) but make sure the straps don't cover any of the joints so that you can bend your fingers normally. And make sure any strapping is removed when you're sleeping.

I'm not sure where you live but a short term combination of Paracetamol and Ibruprofen (fix it all!) if you're UK based is worth trying. If you've still got the same problem, or it's worsening after a week to ten days then go and see your GP.
