Have a great picture you want to use for your custom avatar but find that it's too wide/tall or too big a file size? I have an easy remedy. Right click the picture, click "Save Picture As" and save it in My Pictures. Then when you want to use it, click the Browse button and open it from My Pictures. It will work. Trust me, all of my custom avatars have been obtained this way.

Hope this helps some newer people (like me).:sly:

Uhhhh...

More of a tutorial than a suggestion.. and at any rate, thats called saving a picture.. am i missing something here? :dunce:

I just tried it, and it seems to work. However, it worked with other pictures from other locations of my harddisk as well, so I think the forum will self-convert almost any picture into avatar-compatible file and pixel sizes ... which means this info is kinda useless.

Well no, when I did it WITHOUT the My Pictures thing it said the file size was too big.

...which neither does a good job of the resizing, handles animated gifs or does anything to the file size. You're far better off resizing in something like Photoshop and then uploading. vB does it's best to fit the image into the given space using something like GD, but frankly it's crap. And it'll just plain ignore anything over the set kb limit.

Worked fine for me from any location. Did you try the same picture from "my pictures" and from another location then?

Apart from that, I always prepare my avatars with external software to get the best possible picture quality while maintaining the limitations.
