How well does surround sound work in GT5?

I just picked up an HDMI splitter that will let me split audio out to my receiver from all HDMI sources, so I'll (hopefully) finally have surround sound from the PS3.

I was just wondering what to expect in terms of sensory immersion from a standard 5.1 surround system and GT5. If it done well enough to hear cars coming up from behind or to the side?

It's done really well, I can hear the cars around me. The replays sound great in 5.1 too.

I really like the sound in B-Spec when you go to the "Movie View" or whatever they call it. They really did an amazing job (versus cockpit or the other car views). Neat stuff.

The best part is the standing start right at the beginning of a race! :D

Also, play around with the living room/home theatre setting in GT5 to see which one works best for you.

7.1 sounds great, except for the fact that (even if accurate) the majority of the engine sound coming from directly behind my head in rear-engine cars is a bit overpowering compared to the rest of the sound. You can barely hear the other channels. My surround system is completely calibrated with Audyssey and correct in anything else I test it with, so it's not a calibration issue.

Like I said, probably accurate to the real situation, but annoying imho. I'm glad that I mostly play in bumper-cam view, which completely alleviates the issue for me.

Sounds awesome on Denon 4810 with PLIIZ Enabled. Haven't tried with the Audyssey Wide I think that would be better, as cars aren't usually above you :)

The part I notice is when you enter the event and the car drives down the main straight you can hear the left to right transition. Once I thought someone was giving it a go outside LOL. Definitely recommended.

It sounds extraordinary. The biggest gripe I have right now with the sound is the levels though. The best balance you'll get is with small theatre. The sound quality may be best on Large but the volume curve is way off and the engine sounds completely drown out the music even when adjusted.

It´s is a nice feeling, hearing the exhaust roar from behind, where they should be. You can also hear a car approaching from your 6.

It´s worth the effort to get 5.1. Works fine.

Well, I got everything connected last night and ran in to a small issue.

The splitter I got works fine ... it takes the audio from the HDMI signal and sends it to the receiver via Toslink or digital coaxial. The problem is that not all of my devices output Dolby Digital via HDMI it seems. the PS3 worked fine when set to 5.1 in the settings, but my TiVo and DVD player defaulted to stereo when run through the splitter. Which kinda sucks.

So, I've gone back tot he standard setup for now till I can get another Toslink cable to run from the splitter to the receiver. I will run the PS3 through the splitter still, but have to leave the other devices wired directly to the receiver as before. This will at least give me 5.1 on the PS3 for games and BluRay and give extra inputs for my PC or other things if needed, but I'll still have to switch the TV and receiver separately when sources change, which was the main reason for this solution.

I hope to experience GT5 in all it's surround sound glory soon ... but it was not to be yesterday evening.

I got turtle beach Ear Force DPX21 which are 7.1 dolby and it's just so amazing...my ears have orgasms lol.

Bose 5.1 in my living room, but in my room I have the Logitech 5.1 (x540); sounds great in both rooms.

right on man. I just got the Turtle Beach DSS processor to use with my home headphones. It sounds amazing. I'm really impressed at how they can that surround sound effect in a set of headphones.

Last night i had my wow moment with this set up. I was driving in the SuperGT race at Suzuka and i was going down the back straight when the back of the pack was going under the bridge. The surround sound effect of the cars racing from left to right as they went under was amazing. it does huge things for immersion having good sound!

I really need to pick up a surrounded sound system. :[

My TV speakers are weaksauce.
