I know not many of you live in the Chicagoland area, or even Illinois, but the recent freezing and thawing has been doing a number on the Kankakee river which just so happens to be in my back yard. Outside my house the river is open, but there are huge chunks of ice flowing down it at a very high rate of speed. Not to mention that its up at least a foot and a half. About a mile or so up river, there are huge ice jambs which are trying to be fixed by the local nuke plant, by pumping hot water into the river. Anyway, heres some pics of the ice:







The sign shows how high the water came up the first time, behind it is a parking lot that is pretty much full of water. Right now the water there is almost even with the road. Scary stuff. The last time this happened was '85. It was a huge flood ice came over the bank and the roads had like 2 feet of water on them. I wasnt born yet but my gramma has a crappy home video of it.
Its an awesome playground when it freezes, but the thaw can be very dangerous if conditions are right. Heres a pretty awesome pic I shot a couple weeks ago before there was open water:
