I know not many of you live in the Chicagoland area, or even Illinois, but the recent freezing and thawing has been doing a number on the Kankakee river which just so happens to be in my back yard. Outside my house the river is open, but there are huge chunks of ice flowing down it at a very high rate of speed. Not to mention that its up at least a foot and a half. About a mile or so up river, there are huge ice jambs which are trying to be fixed by the local nuke plant, by pumping hot water into the river. Anyway, heres some pics of the ice:

The sign shows how high the water came up the first time, behind it is a parking lot that is pretty much full of water. Right now the water there is almost even with the road. Scary stuff. The last time this happened was '85. It was a huge flood ice came over the bank and the roads had like 2 feet of water on them. I wasnt born yet but my gramma has a crappy home video of it.

Its an awesome playground when it freezes, but the thaw can be very dangerous if conditions are right. Heres a pretty awesome pic I shot a couple weeks ago before there was open water:

We have a similar thing going on on the lake. It's freezing then breaking up then freezing again, pushing all of the chunks up into nice cliffs you can walk on.

Is that house across the river big enough?

No. I think it should be bigger. That house is small.

Wow, and to think I went though there by train less than 2 months ago and everything looked fine.

That is pretty neat though, have to admit. Will suck if it overflows and pwns the roads though :indiff:

Heh, funny you should ask. It is actually where one of my friends from high school lives. His dad was a car salesman and he kinda messed it up and lost everything. He couldnt pay off the cars and people were getting screwed out of money. Eventually he went to court and I think got convicted of fraud. Now he cant sell cars in Illinois ever again. While this was going on, his wife started messing around with another guy and they eventually got divorced. Now, as far as I know, its just him all alone in that house. Its huge too.

Edit: this isnt a lake so that makes it much worse due to the huge current created by the flow of the water. People have died here because they dont know how to swim. If it was a lake there wouldnt be a problem because the water doesnt flow

I wish I could mess it up and lose everything so I can have a house the size of my town.

I think the guys dad actually helped out a lot in the whole process of bailing him out. But the house is for sale now a bunch of money, Ill see if I can find the listing...
