For those who do not speak Welsh the first part of the thread title translates to: Attention Welsh Members.

I'm off to Cardiff on Saturday 24th February and then staying over until the 25th. I'm going to watch the Arsenal v Chelsea final on the Sunday.

There are four lads going and we are going to need entertainment. Here is what we need and if anyone can recommend the best places to go it would be great.

I'm also up for a bit of sight seeing and anything else that is a must see.

Recommendations

Pubs- What are the best pubs in the Cardiff city centre? Which ones should I avoid.

Clubs- Same questions as above.

Casinos- We'll be looking to have a few games of Texas Hold'Em while we're there. Any recommendations?

Travel- I'm going to be driving there from Essex. I've heard the best route is via the M25 and then M40. Are there any roads which I should avoid once I get close to Cardiff?

If anyone else has visited Cardiff please let me know your feedback.

When we visited Cardiff, we visited the castle ruins right in the heart of the city, and walked around downtown a while. We also visited Castle Coch just east of the city, which was small but beautiful, kind of like a mini Neufschwanstein.

I've always wanted to visit a castle and for some reason I never have, even though I live 20 mins from Britains oldest recordest town.

Did you take any photos while you were there? I really want to try out my new camera.

Yes, I took a bunch, though it was 1998 or so and they are 35mm. Cardiff Castle is in ruins but it is still quite interesting; there's a tower that is leaning so far over you can't quite believe it hasn't caved in yet. They also have a lot of historic displays about castle design and war engines, as well. There are some nice-ish touristy restaurants nearby within walking distance.

Coch was actually built in the early 1800s by a wealthy man and is really more of a vacation home than an actual castle, but it's also wonderful to visit.

Shame about the photos it would have been good to compare them to when I go. I'll definitely check out that Coch Castle. I'll get a picture of that leaning tower aswell (if it has fallen over already).

I'm going to take loads of photos when I'm there so I'll put them in this thread when I get back. Just out of interest what stage was the Millenium stadium in when you saw it? (If you saw it)

As the only currently active Welsh member I'm sorry to say I can't really be much use. I've only been to Cardiff a few times when there hasn't been a game on so I don't really know the places to go. Though in general, Cardiff pubs are pretty safe as long as it doesn't look like a run down POS. If it looks bad, it probably is.

Nuh uh, that's Caerphilly Castle that leans over. They tested one of the first cannons to come to the UK against it to see what effect it would have. Caerphilly castle will be easy to recognize because it is surrounded by loads of moats (sp?) compared to Cardiff Castle which is in the centre of town

The old Cardiff Arms park was still there when he visited.

You're right - Caerphilly is the one. I couldn't come up with the name. And yes, there was no stadium yet. Thanks for setting me straight.

You should've thought more Caerphilly about it then! :p :ouch:

Damnit. That's worse than one of TM's puns!

 👍

The M40 will take you to Birmingham. The M4 takes you to Cardiff.
Unless you were planning on taking the M40 to Oxford, then the A40 into Wales?

As for what to do once there, I have no idea - my last visit was more than ten years ago when I checked out the Uni.

Errm. Not sure to be honest. I'll probably plug the navigation in and let it do its work. I just wondered if anybody knew of any traffic hot spots.

The entire area is a hotspot in rush hour such is the amount of commuters into Cardiff.

And yes, it is the M4 you want in order to get to south wales.
