Having introduced its new and improved answer to the Ford Focus at the Geneva motor show, it seems that Korean car-maker Hyundai is moving on to an altogether more ambitious target. If the first sketches of its latest concept car are anything to go by, Hyundai is planning a new large executive saloon aimed squarely at the Lexus GS, and the American-market Acura RL and Infiniti M45.

Hyundai has just released sketches of the concept car it will unveil at the New York motor show in April, the Concept Genesis. It will be a departure for Hyundai in its styling, but even more so in its market positioning. That's because the Genesis is a V8-powered, rear-wheel drive, large saloon car and, if built, would be a landmark in the maturity of one of the fastest-growing car brands in the world.

At present, the biggest saloon Hyundai sells in the UK is the Mondeo-sized Sonata. In the US, it sells a bigger one – the Azera – which is more accommodating, it says, than a BMW 7-series. However, both cars are V6-engined and front-wheel drive; the Genesis concept, by contrast, has all the mechanical ingredients that buyers of upmarket four-doors tend to prefer.

You can tell from the Genesis's looks that Hyundai has Acura, Lexus and Infiniti in mind as competition for the new car. This concept's high shoulder line, tapered headlights and coupe-like roofline are all cues typical of the breed of upmarket Japanese saloons that have found success in the US at the expense of the traditional American sedan.

However, Hyundai won't only be courting American success with this new saloon. Autocar sources have suggested that Hyundai could bring it to the UK as an 'i70', inline with the brand's new naming strategy, and leaving room for the Sonata replacement, badged 'i50', below it.

The shape almost looks CLS for me. And I love those ridiculous sized wheels, they must be about 30"

 GO AWAY YOU SILLY TROLL. j/k

Now Ford, Toyota, VAG, and Honda are the only ones without a RWD sedan!

Why are your topics about cars, yet you never post ANY pictures?

I know its only a sketch but the big grill and narrow headlights remind me of a Camry.

If people are questioning VW and their attempt at a biggish luxury sedan with the Phaeton, what chance do Hyundai have? It will have to be much cheaper that its alternatives I think to really make its mark. However, Hyundai has been slowly moving more up market so maybe this is the vehicle to take them that next step.

But being Australian, I am partial to a big RWD V8 sedan.

That does look suprisingly like a Camry. It is really kinda scary...

Can Hyundai pull it off? I don't think this car will make a huge splash. Hyundai seems to be where Lexus seemed to be several years ago, in transition from beign rather unknown, without a reputation to a BMW wanna-be. In a few years, maybe the next-gen of this car we will se a genuine competitor to everybody's favorite Bavarian car from Soeul.

I just think that all of these Asian companies are trying to push too hard too fast.

Hyundai's name doesn't turn into an oxymoron when their logo is plastered onto a high-class luxury sedan.

On top of that, knowing Hyundai, this car will be much more sensible than the Phaeton -- much more like the "normal" luxury sedans quoted in the article. I'd say Hyundai has just as much of a chance as Lexus, Infiniti, or Acura did when they first started.

GO AWAY BIG ACCENT
Big Accent? This thing will be upscale RWD and V8 powered!?
I think this would be a good thing for Hyundai. Certainly shows that they are starting go upscale and move away from the small cheap economy korean car maker persona.

Didn't we get a thread literally five days ago about some new, super small Hyundai with some drastically underpowered engine? I seem to recall making some comment about how Hyundai was the luxury brand, which was largely ignored. I also seem to recall the name being stolen from an awful Infiniti product that you can get used for slightly more money than a fun size Snickers bar.

But, how far can Hyundai stretch it's name, before being lost to ambiguity?

Will this create a luxury brand? or will Hyundai move upmarket, while Kia covers the low end?

DWA
Yeah... Hyundai... Go ahead, it will be ignoried like the rest of their cars. xD

Ignored? I don't know...the Sonata's actually pretty popular...

and, if there's anything to get an American's attention, it's "V8" and "Rear Drive." Bonus points for "Sitck."

We did? I'll have to backtrack a bit then.

Hyundai all excited about some car that poor people don't even want, and now they're discussing a Lexus competitor.

For the record, Hyundai has been trying to take down Lexus for seven years, first with the XG300, then the XG350, then the Azera - none of which met sales targets. It's not going to happen, Hyundai. Hell, Audi can't even take down Lexus. And they're Audi.

No way! Hyndai is going after Lexus? What a crazy thing to do! Most of Hyndai's cars are really bad! Lexus has the most awesome cars! It's not like you to do this Hyndai. Let's just hope Lexus doesn't loose their company!

I think they plan on undercutting Lexus, not competing directly with them head-to-head. GM does exactly the same thing with Buick, and they have only been mildly successful.

I like the idea, but we've been talking about a RWD, V8-powered Hyundai for some time here in America, and nothing has come of it until now. It may be cooler than we anticipate, but lets be honest, for that kind of money, you'd probably be happier with a Pontiac G8...

You would, and a lot of us would, but Hyundai really has been taking large steps in the past couple years, perhaps more here than the US, though. I wouldn't be too surprised at it selling mildly well (as long as Hyundai sets sale targets at a reasonable level), because a lot of people just don't trust the American companies like they used to. Lexus does seem like a pretty crazy target though; the G8 and 300 are probably more reasonable, and that'd be a good market for Hyundai, in my opinion.

About the new little one being underpowered, M5Power; true, to us, but if it's intended for Europe, it has to have that range of engines. I'm pretty sure the Focus tops out at maybe 140hp over there (ST aside), and even then I'd assume most sales go to the smaller 1.6 or the diesels. So it's right where it needs to be... and if it comes here, we'll probably get the Elantra's ancient 2.0 in there.

We'd have the get the 3.8-liter V6 for me to be even remotely interested in that trash heap.

Eh. Hyundai 2007 == Honda 1977. I think they're on the right track, but much further behind. This just one of the many attempts to move themselves forward, and eventually they'll have their own "great" car that may or may not have the impact the Civic & Prelude did.
