I'm going to be getting a Hyundai Veloster at the beginning of next year, and thought I'd take an online survey to see what people think of the funky little dog powered Korean. Comments are especially wanted from owners/previous owners. What do you like, or dislike about the car? If you don't like the Veloster, what hatchback would you get instead that's in the same price range?

To answer "motortrend," I'm buying in the relatively new, used car category for around 17,000. The main purpose of the car is to get me to and from work, and to double as a good city car. Therefore I want good fuel economy, funky looks, and reasonable practicality.

Hey guys, thanks for your impute on the Veloster and alternatives to buy. I am currently looking for a Mazda Speed3, used of course seeing as how I could not afford a new. Though the Veloster is still looking like the best car for my money, if I can find a decent Mazda Speed3 for the price I'm looking for, I might very well go with that. I know the VW GTI is a classic know for being a good hatchback and car all around. However it still runs on premium fuel, witch seeing how expensive fuel already is, I cant afford it. Again thanks for the help and keep the any impute of suggestions coming.

A couple of friends own Velosters, they are nice cars with good entertainment systems, look pretty good, pretty practical and seem to offer good value. There are some known faults from what I've observed though, both of the people I know have had steering wheel peeling and one of them had a clunking sound. Both were fixed under warranty so no problem there. Now with all that said the car is not really sporty, I'd buy something else probably but your best bet is to just go see it and compare it to other cars in the segment. All the cars are pretty good and competititve but depending on what you want one of them might seem better.

It helps if you tell us what you are looking for in a car. Does it have to be new? Is power important? Is the warranty important? Looks? practicality? etc...

My dad test drove a Veloster while looking for a new car, and eventually went with the Elantra. The problem with the Veloster was that it was loud and the gearbox hunted a lot. The space was excellent, though, and he didn't think it was too bad to drive.

The only thing I really had a problem with was...the third door. Seriously?

As I recall, it's a fairly unremarkable sport compact that sells more on it's styling and extra functionality, but not much more than that. Power is at best, adequate, with the standard 1.6L. The DCT gearbox as I understand it was positively dreadful, so unless you're rowing it yourself, you might want to shop around.

For the money, I'd say there are much better options out there. Strictly on hatchbacks and liftbacks alone, the Ford Focus SE Sport Package and the Mazda 3 have to take the top spots. If you'd want to go a little smaller, the Chevrolet Sonic 1.4 LT would be a good option as well.

Yeah, when I first saw it, my reaction was "Sweet, a cool little sport-hatchback-thingy. That looks fun to drive." And then I saw the third door, and it became "Oh dear god in heaven, the asymmetry!"

I hadn't even noticed the third door until I read this- and now I think even less of the car.

If I were ever looking for a hatchback for 17K, I'd go with a slightly used Golf GTI. But for your situation you described, I would go with a Mazda 3. It should give you the funky look you want. The Hyundai just looks ugly to me.

I second the GTI recommendation. It'll be more expensive to run, but it'll be far, far, far more fun to drive, just as practical, and is generally a higher quality automobile. I'd also recommend the Mazda3, it's more practical, more efficient, and more fun to drive than the Veloster. On its own I think the Veloster is interesting, but compare it to nearly any car in its price bracket and it starts to look inferior.

As I was going to reply the last time you opened this topic, I've driven one before and while I wouldn't own one as it's a bit too uninvolved to drive (and the naturally aspirated engine is lethargic), it's a great car for your needs.

For you, I'd recommend it. For someone like myself perhaps I'd recommend the Honda CR-Z. If you are looking at the SR Turbo, while I'm unsure where these sit in price, I'd recommend looking at the MazdaSpeed3, GTi or the Ford Focus ST, if within range.

When looking for cars, my dad test drove a CR-Z and really liked it. The only thing stopping him from buying it was the lack of back seats. And that really was the only thing.

I would recommend going out and test driving all of the new cars people have mentioned in this thread, and look at some of the used ones, too. See what you like :).

This. So much this.. :ouch:

The look puts me off a bit, I am really not a fan of Hyundai in many ways, and it doesn't really blow me away in one specific area.

I would rather have a Focus ST, or a CR-Z.

BUT, I think it's an absolutely fantastic car. Lol, I know it sounds weird, and may sound contradicting, but it has awesome power for the fuel economy, the gear one gets with it for the price is fantastic compared to the CR-Z or other hatches, and it is priced efficiently (it's no ST, but the price tag is no ST, either...)

I was originally torn between my car, and the CR-Z when I was buying my new baby, but I wanted FR, and I got more for my money. The CR-Z lacks power and fuel economy for what it is. Back seats aren't hard to import, but it's a bit of work. For your needs and wants, it seems like it's the right choice for you. I'd still look around, of course, but I think you're on a good track as it is.

The DCT is dreadful on some, perfectly adequate on others, though it does seem a bit underpowered.

The manual is also dreadful thanks to no fault of the gearbox itself; it seems to cut power momentarily once you fully release the clutch. This is also true with the Elantra manual, and true + exaggerated in the Veloster Turbo.

Personally, in your price range, a lightly used Mazda3 hatch would do you far better. More power, better fuel economy as long as it's a SkyActiv model, more space, etc.

Fifth Gear did a team test on the turbo version in this week's episode and quite liked it, FWIW.
