My 1996 Saturn daily driver is quickly approaching its death bed and I want to get a small/medium size truck. I currently have a 1979 Chevy truck with 4" lift and 35" tires that I just never use any more since I almost never go off road now that I have a quad. I am thinking about trading in the Saturn and the truck to get a 1997-2000ish Dodge Dakota extended cab.
I realize I will be sacrificing gas mileage if I go from the Saturn to a truck. The Saturn gets 30mpg city 40mpg highway. Now if I go with the Dakota that has a 6 banger it will have better gas mileage but I realize it probably wont be able to tow much.

These are the most important features:
1. 1997-2002
2. It has to be automatic
3. extended cab
4. V6-or small 5.2 v8
5. 4x4 is a must for winter
6. Under 10k if possible
7. Prefer the "Sport" package

You mean a crue cab? :sly:

No. Like I said. EXTENDED cab.
They also have quad cabs but I dont want that. Those are too big.

I am going to try and stick with Dakota sports between 1997-2002. I dont really like the new body style.
The Dakota sport you posted with the plow is nice but I would not want the plow. Too much abuse on a truck. I have my quad for plowing the driveway anyway. I want to stay under 10k

I agree that one looks nice. I just wish it wasnt in Connecticut.

Its over 3 states away which is probably a 15-20 hour drive. That truck is almost exactly what I am looking for. :dopey:
I am going to call on a couple in Michigan today.

Cool good luck.
Being in the UK I could only offer limited amount of help, without knowing your zip code. lol

49441 is my zip code and I appreciate your help so far. I can only look every once in a while since I am at work. I forgot how exciting shopping for a new car is. Well new to me.
I saw the perfect truck and even in silver yesterday while I was at a grocerie store. I wanted it soo bad!

Excellent job! I guess I will really have to decide between V8 or V6. Thats the hardest decision so far. I will try to check those trucks out this weekend. 👍
I just realized that red truck is about 5 miles from my house.

Yeah 5 miles aint too bad, and I included that one just in case the Sport model turned out to be kinda rubbish in terms of condition, and because of the lack of Sport's available in your area, the red one is a fall-back-on possibility. :sly:

If ya get to check em out, gimmie a holla to tell me how it went. 👍

I have arrangements to check out the Red Dakota after work tonight. Out of all the trucks I checked it is the one I really like. I will let you know how it goes. 👍

I test drove this truck last night and I like it a lot. http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.j...ody_style=TRUCKS&doors=&fuel=&lang=&cardist=5 I might have my Saturn sold for $1000 cash too.
I am going to borrow the truck for the entire day on saturday to really test drive it. This way I can also see the gas mileage it will get. It has the 3.2 V8 which is the smaller V8 so hopefully that will help. To my surprise when I floored it, the truck had no problem going completely sideways burning the tires. Its obviously no race car but it has ok power and a well working limited slip rear dif. I will get some pics on saturday of the truck. I like the color of it too. Its closer to a dark cherry color than what that pic shows.
I will also be checking out a 2002 Dakota and will get pics of that on saturday.

Your right Sting hooked me up with this for sure. 👍
The pics on their site suck. The color of the truck looks way better in person and is very close to a dark cherry. I like it a lot better than the pics on that site. The interior is in great condition. Not the greatest color but it was in great shape. When I test drive it for the entire day on saturday I will really put the truck to the test and check everything even closer. Hopefully I can stay comfortable in the seats for more than half an hour. The truck seemed to ride really nice too.
The funny part is I will be driving this 1999 truck from this dealer right over to another dealer on saturday to test drive their 2002 Dakota.

Well its cool that you're being allowed to test it out for a whole day. Gives a good chance to test out the electronics, check the engine bay, under the truck stuff like that just to make sure.
It's a 98 model, and comes in just under your budget $9,988 so make sure no work has to be done to it, otherwise the budget goes out the window lol :scared:

Look forward to pics and your final decision. I wanna know if my 98 wins over the 02. :dopey: 👍

Well since the 2002 is out of my price range I am sure the 98 is going to win. There were only 2 things I saw on the truck yesterday that were wrong.
1. The battery cable was a little loose
2. The 2 plungers on the rear fiberglass tonneau cover were weak and couldnt hold the back up. I told her I would want those replaced even though I will probably remove the cover so my quad will drive right in there.
Besides those 2 things the truck was in great shape. I even beat on it pretty hard and checked out the 4x4 in a couple snow banks.
I was happy the truck had the skid plates and the tow package already.
THanks again for the help sting. :)

No probs, glad I could help.

If i ever drop into the US and in passing ya can give me a ride in the Camaro and we'll call it even. :sly:

I dont think I am going to be able to hold out until this weekend. I might end up just buying it today or tomorrow. My girlfriend keeps saying "buy it today"
