At 16, you write a 40-something question test to get your 'L'. You must display the 'L' on the back of your vehicle. No driving between midnight and 5AM. You must have a fully liscenced driver with you, who is over 25. Supervisor and 1-passenger limit. No alcohol-content. You have the L for 1 year, and then go for a driving test (Apparently the instructors like to fail people). Then you get your 'N'. Must be displayed. Unlimited hours, 1 passenger unless they are family(in that case, unlimited). No alcohol content, and this liscense lasts for 2 years minimum. Then I think you take another driving test for your full liscense.
I've currently got my L, with 1 year coming up at the end of June.
Oh, and conrats, Jimmy.
