I hate being the "Tech Guy"

As a technology nub myself, using terms like 'extract' and 'desktop' with commands like 'find the folder, and double click the icon' means nothing and is just jibberish to me and my people. If you are trying to help people quickly, try using words that aren't only heard in the subject they know nothing about!!

But those terms are used on the screen, a visual representation of what I'm saying, the words are in front of them as they follow the actions, what's so hard about that?

I think the majority of us on here are 'The Tech Guys', I know I am.

But ask yourself this: Would you rather not know how to do tech stuff and have to always ask somebody?

For 10 minute work?
With a minimum of 25 of course. ;)

Of course, it doesn't have to be like that, I have family members who are really handy at DIY, so they fix chores for me, and I fix the computers for them. 👍

But every family has leeches....and those you charge. :)

... and my house was as ancient as the ruins of Troy. TV's from 1993. A Nintendo 64. Old boombox. CD's.

.

CD's - check
N64 - check
Boombox - check
Tv for '93 - missing

Ancient ruins of Troy? I have to agree with Anes, I'm 25 and I know feel old. I understand the boombox (that was a little before my time), but people don't buy cd's anymore? I understand people like to download music, but I need that backup copy on something tangible incase my computer goes.

I only by CD's to put music on my PS3. And it's not like new CD's- like old ones that are very scratched.

What I hate more than being the "tech guy" is being the "thinker guy". 🤬, why can't people think for themselves every now and then? Everyone's always asking me "when should I go to X?", "should I go to Y?", "when should I call my mom for a ride home from Z?".

Think for yourself...

in my last job, being the only guy in the office, clearly that meant im bound to know all about tech, DIY, cars...i knew a bit mayb, but sure learned more as it went on  i only really knew stuff by reading up or trial and error.
also my family has this habit of convincing me them or a friend has a great paying commission for me, then i do hours of work at my cost and time and get guilt tripped afterwards being told i should drop any fee as i almost know them. :irked:

I get this allot, with work family and friends, and I mostly enjoy helping people out.

What annoys me though is the unwillingness of people to learn or do there research before a purchase.

I am not an expert, but if something of mine breaks, I will hit google hard to find a solution, then if it works I have now learn't something.

Already tonight, I have taken home a Sony Blu-ray player and a Laptop to fix!! haha

The cursor my laptop I am using now keeps jumping, makes typing really annoying, I should be fixing this first!!

When this happens to me, I make sure to let the person know he/she is being a nuisance.

Most of the time the message gets across.

I just remembered something hilarious, I am good with computers but I still have a computer guy (well not anymore- seethe Freshman thread)

And he's damned-well better than I am!
