He was 18 yearsold, and supposedly a good kid. What the hell is wrong with people? Its 2008, by now everyone KNOWS narcotics and abusing perscription medication CAN KILL YOU. I don't get it..? How many of my friends and family--and people in general have to die for NO GOOD REASON? Heath Ledger anyone?

I think they are going to charge the two teenagers who sold it to him with involuntary manslaughter. Maybe that will teach them a hard life lesson. And, my cousin's girlfriend (16) also took the heroin, maybe she will now learn the hard lesson as well since she did not overdose.

Hey young people (and adults too), take narcotics and abuse perscription medication and you WILL die. Got it?

Addiction disregards rationality.

But, damnit, there was a point before he was addicted...and obviously he must of known that it was dangerous? I guess I'm just mindlessly furious, its just so pointless..?

Yeah, I understand. Don't be so hard on yourself or take it out on others, though. I hope you can find closure and recover from this tragic loss. Good luck.

Stupid things like this happen all the time, and while I think we all feel for you and your loss, I think we can all agree that there is an important lesson in this; Drugs are bad, no matter what. Its unfortunate that your cousin had to become yet another statistic in an increasingly worrisome trend... But until people realize that their friends, family, co-workers, etc are at risk, people won't learn.

I'm very sorry for your loss, and wish you and your family the best.

I'm definately letting the younger people at both of my jobs know about this so maybe at least one person can be informed to make the right decision.

Thanks guys for the moral support.

Sorry to hear that JCE. :(
A death in the family is hard to deal with at any time, but a death so young that should never have happened is heartbreaking, and I understand your anger & frustration with him for being so foolish in the face of the tonnes and tonnes of evidence that Heroin :yuck: is a killer.

Maybe tomorow I can try to talk to my other family members--everyone is fairly broken up about it. 18 is way too young indeed. :( Thanks for the sentiments.

Bummer. One of my friends knew someone who OD'd on that stuff. Heroin is indeed very dangerous. But you shouldn't be angry, it won't do any good for anyone, as there really isn't anywhere that those emotions to go. It will only make his passing harder on you.

I'm sorry for your loss JCE.

As for rationality... Millions of people smoke EVEN after being pelted over and over and over and over that smoking is bad. If that isn't bad enough they are being hit harder and harder in the wallet. Do people quit? Nope.

I'm with Omnis.

**** heroin. Took the life of Bradley Nowell.

Just be strong dude, and let this be a reminder to never ever use that ****.

As dumb as it is, he was still just a kid. People, especially when they are younger make mistakes. Sorry for your loss, JCE.

Bad as it is, I've never seen somebody OD on a Marlboro Light before.

That's terrible to hear about your cousin, JCE. I don't know why people even start taking heroin, but it is happening all the time around here, with younger and younger kids. While I don't know anybody who has OD'd, I had some friends who used that stuff, some are still using , most have been through tons of rehab and have many other drug problems to conquer, none of them are my friends anymore, heroin changes people. I guess they got lucky though, they're still alive. It's a shame to see any life ended so short.

I'm sorry to hear that, JCE. 18 is way too young to go..:( (I'm 18.. that hit home pretty hard)

Maybe there's some way some good can come out of it, hopefully at least one or two kids will learn from his example and not make the same mistake.

Sorry to hear about that JCE, your family has my condolances. It's just a sad state the world is in where drugs dominate a lot of young peoples social lives. It certainly isn't your fault, it's more often influence from regualr associations and peer pressure that leads young people into drugs. It's a shame it ended this way.

Well, the bottom line is that he wasn't smart enough to know that he shouldn't try it. Everyone knows that it's nearly impossible not to get addicted to such a substance, and dumb people say "pah, I'm not like everyone else, I won't get addicted." It's not a mental decision, it's a chemical reaction. Your cousin just happened to be ignorant of the consequences, which I find unlikely, or he's just an idiot. But even good people make bad decisions, so I'll say that this was simply a stupid decision.

I am sorry to hear of the loss of your cousin. I don't mean to sound like a jerk and rub salt into the wound, but perhaps he had a stressful life and had to get away from it all. Often, people use narcotics for that.

Stay strong, buddy.

That's really terrible, 18 years old is really young, I am 16 but still something like that doesn't ever need to happen but it does. A older cousin of mine has some drug problems, they have been in and out of rehab many times. They are 20 something but it doesn't look to bright for them, everytime they seem like they are getting control of their problem, they fall off the wagon.

I'm sorry to hear this JCE:(. I think I'll just +1 to everything everybody else has said.

Do they know if it was accidental? I know there are people who will use a drug OD to commit suicide. But if he hadn't been using it very long I would imagine that probably isn't the case.

Sorry to hear that bud. It's the exact reason I stay drug free (16 years old). The use of drugs illegally is just like putting the barrel of a loaded shotgun in your mouth, and pulling the trigger.

Sorry again to hear that happen.

That's why I am going to make sure I tell as many young people as possible. I hope posting about it here does at least one person good.

Thanks. You're completely correct on your analysis. It is peers in the end that have the influence in young people's lives. And even in older people's lives too depending on the situation.

He was looking forward to college and life according to his parents. I don't see suicide as the motive--because his girlfriend was there using too.

It was just them doing a bit of "drug recreating". *sigh* There has to be more fun things to do other than this type of stuff...

I'm praying for you to remain drug free. I'm 28 and I've never used any narcotics, smoked even one cigarrette, and I've never seen marijuana, and in fact I've never seen any drugs in person. And I had a pretty fun childhood and teenage years without it. Now granted, I did drink a little beer but thankfully my parents regulated it and it was done with a small portion of responsibility. And now as an adult I'm not an alcoholic--which runs in the family by the way.

Thanks again guys for the sentiments. I woke up thinking about it this morning, I went to work and tried to forget about it. It didn't happen.

RIP Stephen.

For some reason they left off my brother and 2 more cousins.

Wow... He was 23 days older than me.. That REALLY hits home. I really do hope that you can make at least a sliver of good out of it. Even one person saved makes all the difference.

My condolences JCE.

I just don't understand how kids could think things like heroin or weed make you cool, or are cool to do. The side effects of heroin were enough for me to say you'd have to be nuts to try it.

But many condolences again, to your cousin. :guilty:
