Yes, it's true. Aliens.

Very strange, All white with large black eyes. They speak in a different languages but use Human occasionally. Mysterious, unpredicatable, strange, and intruging.

And while I was cleaning the mess from one cage, she began to investigate the bucket I was using to put the destruction in.

Yes, she's trying to chew on the bucket.

This thread is a mere coincidence.

I live with Aliens.

Still enjoying the DRebel I see. :) Awesome birds, awesome pictures.

Oh, I was going to brag about this earlier, but I got it at the beggining of April, and felt too many other things were going on for me to properly rub it in your face.

Indeed we are having fun with it. ;) all sorts of fun :D

I think she's shot over 1700 images. :0

Yes, the birds do rock. That is Nellie the Feather Plucker. She'll barber off her feather at times, and over 4 years has slowly stopped doing it. She's now 11 years old.

As for the lens: Quantaray 70-300mm + blue filter :D

I've got a whole host of iamges I've got to load up for showing. :)

Nice parrots.

I've got an African Grey myself called Jonnie. My parrot barks, swears, coughs and even replicates the sound of my mum clanking plates togther when she's washing the dishes.

Amazing.

That is pretty neat. How strong are these birds that you have, like how hard do they bite?
hehe, it's not "how hard can the bite", it is more alone the lines of "How much pain can you stand?"

Nellie, the alien in the pictures, sliced my ear open. She's also drawn blood on my hands and fingers. Yes, she has a very sharp beak. 99.9% of the time she's an angel. When guests are around, she gets over excited and wants to bite them. If she can't bite them, she'll bite the nearest piece of exposed skin. And considering that she's deathly afraid of my wife, I'm the one holding here.

At the Rescue, we have a Military Macaw that hates people. He's sent numerous people to the ER for stitches (the record is 8 stitches in one person) and he broke a finger on the President of the rescue.

My greenwing macaw can exert around 300psi when he really clamps down. He bruised my finger to the point where I couldn't bend it for 2 days.

Yes, I live with Aliens

This is where one realises that getting scratched by a cat is indeed a pleasure ;)

Aliens indeed....

They bite like a pair of boltcutters. He's posted pictures of a stack of 1x6s turned into mulch over the course of a day by one of his birds.

No disrespect intended, but why even keep a bird like that around? If a dog came in to the Humane Society who hated people, and bit anyone he could get a hold of causing wounds requiring up to 8 stitches, he'd be PUT DOWN. Why is a bird so much more important? What purpose is this bird serving besides posing as a menace?

It probably wouldn't surprise you to know that alot of them do.

Why is Hector still alive at the rescue? Well, because he's at a Rescue. I don't want to spin this thread in that direction, as it was supposed to be a humorous thread.

Hector lived quite happily with a woman for 22 years. He was a very happy, cuddly and affectionate bird. One day, his owner went out and literally dropped dead of a heart attack. None of the womans children wanted the bird, so instead of taking a loved family pet out back and disposing of it, they called the rescue. The president went out and picked up the bird and brought him here. The bird instantly associated being removed from his companion of 22 years with this man. Hence the broken finger. Hector was OK with the presidents mother for a few days, until he reached down grabbed her finger in his beak and peeled it like a grape.

From then on, anyone that got within beak distance was granted pain. So now Hector lives in a huge room with other Macaws and is kept free from human contact.

Does he deserve to die, simply because of how he lived?

To top it all off, Parrots don't simple lay down and die like a cat or a dog when given the injection. They fight with every ounce of their being. It is incredibly traumatic to go through. A loved pet that you've had with you for 20 years, struggling (and talking to you) while it dies from your choice.

Yes, Hector will live out his life. Hating Humans the whole time.

Hector is one of the easy ones. Try Lola. She has good reason to hate people.

[edit]AP, no offense taken. It is a legitimate question[/edit]

*insert X-files theme music here*

Woah!

 Anyways cool parrots, I wish I had a bird.

I have an alien infestation, too! Mine have glowing red eyes and eat all of my food. They havn't tried to kill me...yet. The white one has a "crazy eye" she uses to hypnotize people to do her bidding. Think Pinky and the Brain in dog form.

I wasn't really suggesting putting the bird to sleep, though I can see from my post how that might have been inferred. I suppose releasing him into the wild is out of the question too, since he'd have to be transported to another country to do this. I just find it a bit pointless to spend money to keep a bird that offers nothing prodictive back to its rescuers.

Can't the same thing be said about any pet? Short of seeing eye or police dogs and a few other exceptions, what does any animal do that's "productive"? Most of the time it's just about companionship. Plain and simple.

That must be really, really bad. I've had to put two dogs down, luckily my dad was braver than myself and he took them to the vet. However, dogs don't really talk. They may yelp, but talking would definatly be even more weird and depressing... Lets change subjects.

Why have I only seen six or so pictures from the 1700!? More damnit!

I've really started to get rolling on pictures. I get up a bit earlier every day to go spend an hour trying to grab some pictures.

True, but I consider "companionship" to be productive. That's the purpose of a pet. This macaw is not even offering that anymore. Therefore I see it as useless to try and keep this bird domesticated.

And there in lies the problem. He's not really domesticated, but he's not really wild either. He doesn't know how to forage for food, or shelter. He only knows the life he's grow up with and basic instinct. Which 20 years ago, birds were pulled from nests and never learned anything from a parent.

To return him to the wild, you're talking about flying him to the Amazon and releasing him. UNfortunately, There are strict laws about releasing pets into the wild, as well as transporting them over borders. So he's really stuck without a home. Choice comes down to kill him or keep him in a rescue.

As soon as I can sort, edit and reduce in size to upload :D

I've got some great clownfish shots to show you!

Cool birds man.

How much are these mammoth lenses? I'm in the mood for going DSLR over the summer (if I can afford the cost changing schools)

That beak looks as if it has the crushing capability of a tank! :scared:

Nice parrot though. How long do they live? Am I right in assuming that 11 is pretty good going? or is that just middle aged?

11 Years is really young.

Our other Cockatoo is somewhere between 45 and 50. I have a Conure that is 12, a Cockatiel that is 13. Down at the rescue, we had a cockatoo that was 51 and we have a pair of lovebirds that are 22.

There have been many documented cases of Macaws in their 70's and 80's.

Our two macaws will easily out live my wife and I.

AO

Wow! That's quite a long lifespan!

And I thought getting 6 years out of our old hamster was good. :grumpy:
