I personally think a war is ill-advised. I also think that coming to some sort of "logical" agreement with Sadaam is not really possible. Unfortuneatly we are not in the position we were in with Castro. Hussein has valuable resources at his command. And that we "need".
For it to be "useful" to us, Sadaam has to be "eliminated" from within.
If we (the US) eliminate him he becomes a martyr and his whole country becomes an even bigger enemy.

I thought most of Iraq was pro-American? Because they disliked Sadaam's ruling of the country.

Basically that forum is a right wing Forum, and you are going to get a very small, narrow minded section of society posting there.
I think that 50 years from now our grandchildren are going to read about Bush, his administration, and the axis of evil in the same light as the McCarthy hearings of the last generation.
Fear comes from ignorance, and unfortunately there are few more ignorant than our own president. (Who was a longtime drinker, cocaine user, and graduated from college with a C- average under dubious circumstances.)

While I think Tom is overstaing the case a little, I have to agree with Gil's analysis pretty much to the letter.

if his whole country is taken over that will be a smaller problem. martyr my ass.

There are enough Sadaam Loyalists, that if he is disposed of by and external force, they WILL be a bigger problem than Sadaam.
It will, in their eyes, prove that we, or whoever, is the "Great Satan". This will add validity to Sadaam's claims.
If he is to be exterminated (note: I said exterminated, not assasinated), it MUST be from within his own country/regime.
Then it will appear that his own disagreed with him and took over the government to save themselves from his lunacy.

Saddam is a consolation prize, which will keep Bush in office no matter who runs against him in the next election.
If they had pressed the issue of Bin Laden any longer, it would have begun to look like one of the greatest failures of the modern age. Imagine every resource of the most powerful country on the planet not being able to find one man travelling on the back of camels and horses.
We need a Hitleresque figure to personify Bush's political nightmare: "The Axis of Evil." Saddam fits that ideal perfectly.
And I agree with what Gil just said. I think we could have killed him in 1991, but now it isn't in our best interest as it will foster further terrorists attacks in his name down the road.

And as to comparing Castro to what is going on in the middle east, that's laughable. Castro may not have agreed with the US ideals for government, but he did what was in the best interest of his people.
The US mafia was raping Cuba, and would have continued to do so if Castro hadn't taken control. Under Castro Cuba has the highest literacy rate in the world, and one of the best health programs. If we hadn't placed an embargo on all their imports, they would probably be a highly developed society instead of a borderline 3rd world nation due to lack or resources.

My comparison with Castro was that we were able to assert a certain amount of restraint on Cuba that we are in no way able to bring to bear on Iraq.
I've been to Cuba and I understand how it was one of the biggest tourist attractions of the 1960's.
With the exception of the crabs and the tarantula's, It would be a cool place to hang out and vacation.

So I assume you're left wing. In which case, I think you have a very small, narrow-mind. :) Works both ways.

Tom, where did you attend college? I went to the University of Pennsylvania undergrad, arguable the worst Ivy League college, and it was damn hard for me. President Bush went to Yale -- the best Ivy League college and got a C-? That's damn good for a longtime drinker and cocaine abuser! :D

Tom,
I've been to Cuba, courtesy of Uncle Sam's canoe club.
At GTMO (Gauntanamo Bay) the most prevalent inhabitants are huge, hairy tarantulas.
However, Cuba is verdant and green with beautiful foliage, white beaches and water so clear you can easily see the bottom out for about 100 yards.
Back in the '60s before the Cuban missle crisis, Cuba was more popular as a vacation spot than Puerto Rico.

Bush should just blow Saddam up and take over Iraq. institute a consittutional monarcy with the new president and let them take it from there, as long as we get oil real cheap.
$1.52 / gallon?!

Just for the record, I'm not only Anti-Iraq, I'm also Anti-America (please also note this is government wise). I also am Anti-UK, my home country and in no way patriotic.

To say I'm Anti-world would be a good idea. I might just go claim the Artic Circle for myself.

The prices for oil are mad?

WTF?

War is even madder you idiot.

Heh, what kind of a war do you think it would be? Your country would be on our side, as would Australia, because Saddam Hussein needs to be dealt with (they say), and then France and Russia would be on our side because they have oil money still in Iraq which they want back - and it's no small sum. Saddam would be a pushover with that kind of support.

You're not allowed to. You can only stake claims in unsettled land with a decree from a government, and most countries have signed the treaty saying they wouldn't claim the Arctic. :p

Cuba, so he can eventually become a patsy for a high crime.

Good luck with your ex-patriation.

Okay, but you have to find a picture of Antartica's flag on the internet. Then carefully Photoshop it onto your fishing vessel flank (you do own and operate your own sea-going vessel, right?).

I think it's silly for people in the USA to refer to themselves as "American." Canadians are American, too, because America is a continent. We're all North Americans.

But then what should we call ourselves? Yoo Essians (U.S.-ians)?

I guess it's just one of those widely accepted wrong-isms.
