I have been more than a little bothered by how our country has reacted to this disaster. While I appreciate that we have all joined together, united by a common event that shall never be forgotten, the worst of all mankind has also surfaced. I read the paper, watch the morning and evening news, and listen to the radio during the day, and all have very similar reports seeping in. People are stealing flags, Arabs in the US are being harassed to no end. In my area, one man was arrested with an arsenal of "pipe bombs" with the intent to destroy local 7-11's and other Arab run Convenience stores. Hate walks among us, and he wears the face of our neighbors.
I have heard more than one person say that we should throw all of them out of the country. It seems that people forget that part of our country's greatness was born from etchings on the statue of liberty: (and I have been there more times than I can count, and it is majestic.)
"The New Colossus
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
with conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
a mighty woman with a torch
whose flame is imprisoned lightning,
and her name Mother of Exiles.
From her beacon-hand glows
world-wide welcome;
her mild eyes command the air-bridged harbor
that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands your storied pomp!"
cries she with silent lips.
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
Emma Lazarus (1849-1887)"
We are a country born of refugees, we weren't the British elite, we were a penal colony much like Australia. People that could not co-exist in polite society were sent here to fight for their very existence. I take pride in the fact that we have risen to become one of the greatest civilizations that has ever graced this planet.
This having been said, I believe that war may be the only recourse to preserve our great society. Today it was a segment of our society, highly visible to be sure, but insignificant to the growing threat of greater destruction. Next time it could be a small nuclear device in the middle of Manhatten, or San Francisco. (who knows what they will have 15 years from now.)
I fear for the safety of every one of us, and that is why I believe that we should do everything within our power to destroy those who might do us harm. This is going to be long, and drawn out to the point of Viet Nam's unpopularity, but if we do not dispense with our enemies, our nation as a whole will suffer.
If a mother felt that her children were threatened by an animal, or another person, she would fight to the last for their survival. The US has 300 million children to protect. 300 million white, black, asian, arab, indian, native american, and hispanic children who want nothing more than to live in the greatest country on earth, and feel as free as my grandparents did the moment they saw Ellis Island.
