:) Guess what my college english class is doing... Thats right a research paper on weather or not America should go to war...

In a research paper one of the best ways to get peoples opinion is threw a survey... Well I didn't want to stand in front of target, so i figured, why not gtplanet!!!

After you post your answer please give your reason why or why not.... (doesn't have to be long, thats my job ;) ) If your reasons are good, or i like what you say, I may use your quote in my paper (using your sign on name)... With your permission of course :D thanks for your help, I really do mean that!!!

Let me start things off by saying, I do think we as a country need to go to war... Although I do admit this is a war we have never seen, this country can not sit by and let things happen to its own people without showing that we will not stand for such actions... I really feel strongly about this, to point that if it comes down to it, I will not think twice about joining the armed forces and helping them with my knowledge of a certain skill i use everyday.

Thanks for helping me guys!!! i mean that!!! :D

The US has historically only done well fighting against cultures fairly similar to our own. By that, I mean cultures where the vast majority of the fighting forces actually care about their survival.
Yes, there have been many American fighting men that have valiantly sacrificed their lives so others may live. But that was usually dictated by circumstance, not personal conviction. How many would be willing to undertake a suicide mission, knowing full well from the get-go that they would definitely not survive? Sure, life in the US armed forces may be depressing sometimes (trust me on this), but I don't think we have too many that are suicidal.
However, like the Vietnamese, these people care only about how much they can hurt us; how much damage they can inflict. And they would PREFER it to be posthumous, for (to them) there is no greater honor than dying in the service of Allah.
All our traditional scare tactics won't work. We can't frighten them, can't intimidate them. And that seems to be how the US has historically worked; show enough power that the enemy is afraid to hit us for fear of retaliation. That won't work here. Not this time.

Of course, a few covert operations... and maybe a couple of surgical strikes...

I agree, old friend.

We could bomb the snot out of any country on this earth. But, these people would enjoy it...and see it as a victory.

We need, as you said, surgical tactics to simply eliminate the people directly responsible and let nations know that we won't tolerate this, but we will keep our cool and react with common sense and thoughtfulness, not massive bombing and death.

Should we go to war? There are many reasons to go to war and many not to go to war. We need to do what needs to be done. I have a great respect for life, all life, even life that shouldn't be respected. There is a balance which not going to war would cause more hurt, pain, suffering, and loss of life than If we did go to war. I hate to brake it to you, but we are already in war with the Talibon. We issued the first strike (in their minds) against them with our western ideas and way of life. The act of terrorism (in their minds) was a retalliation. Now it's our turn and we need to define full support from our neiboring countries before any action takes place.

This is a volitile situation that needs careful consideration. I hate to say it, but politics plays a key role as to weither or not we go to war and that's where Congress is going though the Law to determine how we can justify declaring war against the people and/or governments involved.

With the support of all NON-Terrorist states and governments we should go to war. Yes, let us rid this world of views and opinions which do not adhear to common goodness. I don't think we should to it alone, and without the support of the other nations I feel we should wait until we do.

I have been more than a little bothered by how our country has reacted to this disaster. While I appreciate that we have all joined together, united by a common event that shall never be forgotten, the worst of all mankind has also surfaced. I read the paper, watch the morning and evening news, and listen to the radio during the day, and all have very similar reports seeping in. People are stealing flags, Arabs in the US are being harassed to no end. In my area, one man was arrested with an arsenal of "pipe bombs" with the intent to destroy local 7-11's and other Arab run Convenience stores. Hate walks among us, and he wears the face of our neighbors.
I have heard more than one person say that we should throw all of them out of the country. It seems that people forget that part of our country's greatness was born from etchings on the statue of liberty: (and I have been there more times than I can count, and it is majestic.)
"The New Colossus
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
with conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
a mighty woman with a torch
whose flame is imprisoned lightning,
and her name Mother of Exiles.

From her beacon-hand glows
world-wide welcome;
her mild eyes command the air-bridged harbor
that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands your storied pomp!"
cries she with silent lips.

"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Emma Lazarus (1849-1887)"

We are a country born of refugees, we weren't the British elite, we were a penal colony much like Australia. People that could not co-exist in polite society were sent here to fight for their very existence. I take pride in the fact that we have risen to become one of the greatest civilizations that has ever graced this planet.
This having been said, I believe that war may be the only recourse to preserve our great society. Today it was a segment of our society, highly visible to be sure, but insignificant to the growing threat of greater destruction. Next time it could be a small nuclear device in the middle of Manhatten, or San Francisco. (who knows what they will have 15 years from now.)
I fear for the safety of every one of us, and that is why I believe that we should do everything within our power to destroy those who might do us harm. This is going to be long, and drawn out to the point of Viet Nam's unpopularity, but if we do not dispense with our enemies, our nation as a whole will suffer.
If a mother felt that her children were threatened by an animal, or another person, she would fight to the last for their survival. The US has 300 million children to protect. 300 million white, black, asian, arab, indian, native american, and hispanic children who want nothing more than to live in the greatest country on earth, and feel as free as my grandparents did the moment they saw Ellis Island.
