I think not
Ok, my contract is about to expire on my current (rather 🤬 ) phone and I am looking at getting a new one. I was pretty much sold on an I-phone, however I have recently seen the palm pre and am very tempted by it instead. So, the question is, for exactly the same price and contract, do I go for an I-phone 3G or the Palm Pre?

Any advice would be appreciated (but please lets try not to start a fanboy argument) Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere, my search came up blank but if this is not the case, feel free to point me in the right direction and I'll lock this one. Thanks.

They are both good phones and you won't go wrong with either one. The physical keyboard on the Pre is a little meh according to reviews, and the touch screen keyboard on the iPhone takes a while to get used to. The real question is if you want to deal with AT&T or Sprint and how their service is in your area.

Yeah, a lot of the reviews I read concentrated on this and how good their various coverages are. The thing is I am in the UK and both phones are on the same network so it makes very little difference, hence the online comparisons I found were not overly useful!

One thing to swing you the iphone side is that there are so many developers making games and handy little apps for it. You can get compasses, some tools, cool games, facebook or ebuddy. It is quite a brilliant little phone, it also has the great music player that apple has made.

Ah, my bad. I didn't see that you were in the UK.

Here's how I see it...I used an iPhone since shortly after release up until about 4 months ago. I then switched to a Blackberry. My conclusion was that while the iPhone is a very good media device (music, movies, games/apps), it is overall not a very good phone. No MMS support on older models (though that's not the case now), and so-so call quality on the first gen phones. I have no experience with the 3G or 3Gs models, so I can't say how their call quality is. The iPhone also lacks the ability to multitask, so if you want to listen to Pandora and check your email at the same time for example, you can't. The virtual keyboard on the iPhone is not bad, but it definitely takes some getting used to. I prefer the physical keyboard on my Blackberry.

I have no experience with the Pre, but if it's worth anything, my friend went from a Blackberry to the Pre for a while, but ended up returning it and getting another Blackberry.

If you havn't, check out the video reviews by phonedog.com. They are pretty in depth and very informative. You can find them on Youtube or on their website. 👍

No Android phone? I'm personally a fan of that and will be switching to one once AT&T gets one. I have the iPhone 3G currently and I do like it, it does lack features though that should have been there since day one like an external LED light, video camera, and removable storage. I wish the Google Nexus One was on AT&T as I'd probably end up with that.

Those are pretty much my criticisms as a 3G user. I don't generally multi-task on it, but it's rather annoying having to find the app you were using as closed, simply because you wanted to reply to a text. It can play music via the 'iPod' app and do other things at the same time, but I've found mine tends to grind to a halt if I do this. Particularly when streaming music via Bluetooth at the same time.

The most annoying thing for me is the lack of proper keyboard. I just can't get used to it for some reason, and you simply can't use it without staring inanely at the screen. If I had to use it that regularly I'd want to kill myself.

I would also like to throw any android phone in there, I personally feel they are better than the iPhone and the HTC models are good. So yeah check one out in store.

x3 on the Android phone. I have an HTC Eris through Verizon and love it. I'll love it even more once they get around to updating the firmware to 2.1. :sly:

A jailbroken iPhone is just wonderful ;) Then Multitasking is possible and all that stuff thats missing can be put in... I didnt want to do it before, but then took a gamble and did it and its a joy to use now... No more restrictions from Apple... just need to watch out with updating and such... Phone works normal and the apps that become available to you are great! I cant say anything about the Palm Pre... havent used it or seen it... At the moment I have an iPhone 3GS. The only real gripe I have about the iPhone is its crappy camera.... While other phones are sporting 8MP cameras, this thing still has a 3MP camera with no flash or LED.... kinda sad actually...

Well, sorry to bring up an old thread but thanks for the advice and just to let you know, the iphone won out for me in the end. The number of apps and the better (in my opinion) web browsing experience did it for me. I'm very happy with my new toy!!!

Good to see yet another happy iPhone user, i've had a iPhone 3G almost 2 years, patiently waiting for the new model this summer. Just another thing to wait for, just like GT5.
